How can I tell the difference between a 361 and 360? Its in a 76 F350 manual trans, 2wd, dual rear wheel truck. We just got this as a farm truck and it only has 52000 on it .In great shape mechanically just a little rusty from sitting around a farm. Am gonna fix the body though as it drives nicer than our 90 chevy 3500. Want to keep her around a while as we'll only put less than 5k a year on a one ton. Seems heavier than the chevy too.
I may be wrong, I was told a few years ago that the 361 and 391 were different in that the flywheels were different. Otherwise the engines were the same.
The 360/361 and 390/391 are really the same displacement, just renamed for HD duty to differentiate the two. Supposedly in the 361/391 FE the block is stronger, it also has a forged crank. The Comp ratio is very low and it maxes out at about 3k rpm. This is a brute torque motor for HD work and nothing else. If you pull stumps for a living it's great, but don't drive it to work. My uncle has a f500 dumper with a 361 and it will chug all day long if you have plenty of gas I believe the correct term is gallons per hour.
but anywhoo..... good money says that F350 has a 360. All questions answered by the VIN#.

Yeah, I meant F(T) not F(E). Thanks gashog for reminding me the they have different names. Another of those odd ford thangs (I grew up in an AMC family).
