Not sure when Ford started burying the heater core in the dash, but I think yours is stil very simple to replace.
Remove the hoses & a few screws from the heater core housing & pull the core out.
Need more info? Look in your Haynes manual.

Welcome to FTE!
I'm pretty sure that changing it out in a 1990 is a simple procedure (compared to the later vintage where you have to basically remove the whole dash). I think you just open a trap door that allows access then slide it out.
I think 87XLT's description is pretty good.
