HI all
I have a 71 f100 w/ a 390. Problem is with my dizzy. My mechanical advance isn't advancing until 1500 rpm. How do I change this? How do I properly recurve my distributor? The problem is when I floor it its not getting enough timming and bogging until 1500. It helps when I advance my base timming as far as it goes but then I get pinging bad at the top end. WHat I need is alot of timming at idle and it to level off at about 3000 and not so much as to get pinging. Thanks for your help
Richard
That’s the way the curve is supposed to look, a lot of advance in the beginning and tapering off at the end. Something is sticking inside the dizzy, take the cam off along with the base plate and examine what is sticking. Usually just a good cleaning up is all that’s needed.
make sure your vacuum advance is hooked up to the low side on your carb.
or get a flyweight & spring replacement kit (you can get various springs to change your mechanical advance).
if you have a stock motorcraft distributor, check the nylon bushings under the braker plate.
i had one that fell off & without it in place it slightly tilts the breaker plate. caused me missing, rough idle etc.
