Question 94 Explorer Questions??

My first and of most concern. I have a 94 Explorer EB Edition, Auto. When It first starts up and until It warms up, I am getting a knocking sound which seems to be coming form my values or so I think. I am not sure but It has me worried. I have done a complete tune up hoping to fix the problem but It did not help. I was told It could have to do with some vacuum lines not being hooked up.
As you can see from the pics some of my vacuum lines are not hooked up anymore and the hole EGR system Is missing. Is there anything here that would cause It to Knock?

Finally, My speedometer Is bouncing. At first It was only doing It above 45MPH but now It Is doing It at any speed and I don't think It Is reading right. I have checked the cable all the way down to the transfer case and It seems to be fine.
What Is most likely the problem? It Is the speed sensor In the transfer case or the speedometer In the dash Is going out?

*Does the knocking occur all the time, under accleration only, or at cruise?

*On the speedometer, in all likelyhood it's the speedometer itself. Ford put a boatload of speedometers into Rangers/Explorers of your vintage that have a jewel (bearing) that is vulnerable to failure and the result.....bouncing needle. On that note, junkyarding one along with swaping the odometer will quite likely produce another dancing speedometer needle. Your best bet will be to send the speedometer to a shop and have them install a new jewel, unless you're willing to spring for a new speedometer from Ford which, per what I've been told, has the new jewel in it. That new speedometer from Ford ain't gonna be cheap. BTW, and I do doubt it's the problem, I would check the speedometer drive gear before pulling the speedometer as a matter of thorough diagnostics.

If the valve train noise only occurs when the engine is cold, I suspect it could be a valve/lifter tap. However, this would be more of a tap/clicking sound as opposed to a 'knock'. It should quiet down as the engines warms up. This is a fairly common problem on the Gen I 4.0s.

Question

Ok well I will check the speedometer drive gear which If I am correct Is In the transfer case were the speedometer cable goes In? As for the sound It Is more like a tap/clicking sound. So are you telling me that It Is not a problem and not to worry about It?
Next question. In the all the pics there are two things mounted to the Fuel Intake. The top one Is all hooked up but the lower one Is plugged In but the vacuum lines that go to It are missing. You can see It real good In the second pic. That why I posted these pics so I could find out what It does and why Its not hooked up all the way.
First off what Is this part and what does It do. Second how do I go about finding the vacuum lines that go to It?
