All right, I'll confess to being on the novice side at rebuilding these old trucks. I've got a frustration that I just don't think I can do anything about, but I thought I'd ask.
Spent two or three days pouring over Chilton, Haynes, and even a Ford repair manual before I took on replacing the hub/rotor assembly on my 79 F150 4x4. (Manual locking hubs...) Having never owned a 4x4 before, I knew I was in for some surprises, but this was a little ridiculous.
After removing the outside hub assembly (where the switch is...) I knew I was in trouble because while similiar, the parts installed didn't match what ANY of the above listed manuals showed me.
Took me three hours to figure out that I was working on a hub assembly for a 85 Bronco. Once I established that, removing and replacing the hub was relatively easy. I can read a manual and follow instructions, but how am I to know what is actually stock 79 F150 and what isn't? I sure didn't expect to find the hub rotor assembly instructions under 85 Bronco.
Thanks all...1975...I had that very set of instructions printed out and in my hand while doing the job. If you scroll down to 85 Bronco, that is what my truck has on it. No, it didn't have any other brand names and appeared to be Ford stock. Just from a different model year. Yes, I'm sure someone just swapped one out of a junkyard, but I wish there was a way to know that before its too late.
I also wish I had a million dollars, a cuter girlfriend and my own tropical island.
I wish you lots of luck-What I thought was an innocent little '73 f100 turned out to be'73 f100 body on a '72(narrower)frame,'78 bronco front and rear axles, along w/bronco steering box,'75 390(thought it was a 360 for a year-someone swapped air boxes-360 label on it).Foun out about the frame the hard way AFTER I bought a brand new behind the axle tank.Hope your experience goes easier than mine
