99 Expedition Tailgate Info/problem...
Hi, I've got a 99 Expedition, which is having an issue with the door ajar light staying on along with my interior light. I've read the WD40 comments and will try that, I know that latch is rusty looking so it may fix it. If it doesn't, how do you get the tailgate panel off? The wiper won't work, its striped or something on the tailgate so I'm going to need to get in and check that out, might as well take care of both issues. I've not found anything on here to explain how to get the panel off on that model. Its a 99 Eddie Bauer Expedition. Thanks!

Your problems may be related. If the rear window sensor is the one causing the door ajar warning, it will also disable the rear wiper (to prevent it from running with the window open. I would try to lube up the rear window latch before you go after the wiper motor. If you can hear the wiper motor trying to work, then you have a different problem - it may be as easy as tightening the nut that attaches the wiper arm to the motor (this is a common problem with the front wipers).

If it is like my 01, there are 1 screws on the handle that you use to pull the gate down, take those out, and then take the panel from around the window (it pulls off) and then the lower panel also pulls off, you can pull it out a little bit, and see the fastners in there, what I do is get a pair of needle nose pliars and put the on each side of the fastner and pry it up.

They're not related. The wiper problem was long before the door ajar issue. At first it would not work, I'd grab the wiper arm and move it up and it would work fine. Sometimes it did this, sometimes it didn't, but that always got it to work. One time I pushed a little to hard, and it stripped it. If I push it up when its on it will go across, then come back down and stay there. You can hear a grinding sound. I'm assuming its junk, but want to pull it apart and find out why, and possibly replace it if needed.

Well, it was the switch. The WD40 thing didn't work for me, however I unplugged the harness now my lights will go off! I'll get a new switch sometime soon, that whole thing was corroded and rusted up pretty good. For 2 years I had a salt spreader on the back of it, which could be why. Though I wasn't using salt, anyhow I appreciate all the help! I was able to get the panel off, though I didn't check my wiper issue out, I will later now that I know how easy that panel comes off. Once again thanks.

If the dome light stays on and the "door ajar" light is constantly lit on the dash, you probably have the same issue. Just spray a bunch of WD40 into all the door release latches (really soak em) -- that's it. Works for most people (including me on my previous truck, a 97 F150). At least for a while anyway.
