I was wondering what would be the cheapest way for an extra 100hp out of a 5.8L? I found a powerdyne supercharger that says 45-50% increase in power for around $2500. Could I get about 100 more horsepower from a new intake and heads? The edelbrock performer heads and upper and lower intake run about $1900, I could throw in some ceramic headers and make it to $2500.
im not sure how much power a good set of heads and intake will put out along with headers, but im sure all three together would put out around 100 more. if youre gonna get those go with a bigger cam and MAF, have the computer tuned. i dont know if it can be or not.
a kennebell is a better truck SC because it builds torque right off idle vs 2000+ rpms like most other SC. but to gain the full bennys of an sc you really need to have heads, intake, bigger throttlebody, headers and a free flowing exhaust to begin with. the stock setup will be choked out. I suggest you start with those pieces and see where your at, get comfortable with it and go from there. when you think about going with a SC you have to also keep the compression ratio below 9.0-1 otherwise you will have head gasket issues
depends, if it has a good tranny cooler and is well maintained it will probably hold up. but you do make a good point that the tranny and a few other components will need addressed to handle said power increase.
Just take it easy from a stop. Once moving down the road, you should be able to play with stomping it without all the torque blasting your stock drivetrain.
a shift kit helps with shifting, but does nothing to increase the strength of a tranny. infact it may cause increased heat which KILLs an auto tranny quick. only go with MAF if you absolutly need to. speed density can handle a cam, head, intake, throttlebody upgrades no problem. the key is getting a cam with a lobe seperation no less then 114*. compcams can help there. BBK has a 56mm throttlebody that is direct bolt on , may or maynot give an increase depending on the rest of the stuff done to motor including exhaust being stock or upgraded to headers and free flowing y pipe/muffler
ok, well being its a 96 we are dealing with obd-II setup here. therefor custom tuning will be required for most any major mod you perform. Headers would complement your exhaust big time, look into a ceramic coated header to reduce underhood temps.
So headers would give me more noticeable power than I got with just the y-pipe? Oh and it wouldn't make it too much louder will it, I have an original 40 flowmaster and its louder than my stereo and I have a 10" sub in the back.
Yes, upgrading the exhaust system is the best way to gain some easy, cost effective HP rigth away, there are various kits around, i´m looking at a Pace-setter´s (around a 12-14.5% HP gain).
