I Finally Got Smart And Used The Search And Got The Info I Needed . I Am Going To Use The Crane And Crane Lifters And Cloyes With The Timing Straight Up
Hey Eric... You don't actually need an adjustable timing set with the Crane "powermax" cam. Just get a standard all metal timing set if your current cam gear is phenolic.
After buying one myself [the Crane cam] I got a bit stumped when trying to degree it. Called Crane and a very helpful tech went over the #'s with me. Turns out they actually have +5 degrees of advance built in to the cam, so when installed with the stock -4 degree timing set you get +1 degree of cam timing. Very clever, and saves you the headache of trying to find an adjustable timing set.
FYI the newest Comp Cams 3224 timing sets are NOT adjustable as the catalog states. It's actually nothing more than a standard Cloyes set in a Comp box. They no longer make the 3134 adjustable version. Cloyes still makes their adjustable model [8-1014], but it's around $85. If anyone winds up using a cam that needs timing adjustment or wants to re-time the stocker, I'd suggest paying a machine shop $20 to cut a new keyway in the stock crank gear.
