Just thought I would post this: More than a 1.0 mpg gain after the following:
*Switch back from 5w40 to 15w40
*Reset computer
*Switched to DK
Got cheap deisel tonight so I figured i would calculate real fast (math by hand that is) and all stop and go city driving was 17 mpg with a stock unit. Old mpg's was low 15's ish.
I've always believed in high quality, high dollar oil but would have thought it would have gone the other way with the synthetic producing better results. If you are to believe half of the propaganda put out by Madison Ave. I just tried the new Castrol 15-40 for the first time after using Rotella from day one.
Restting the computer is what increased your milage. Anytime I change the program I'm running my mileage increases. After a couple of tanks (computer learning) my mileage always goes back.
It's a fact that clean oil can improve your mileage. That's why i run bypass filtering. I always run the same mileage. A proper dose of a good additive helps by adding lubricity, improving cetane and dealing with water.
Nut

Resetting it has never made a difference in the past. I think it was everything together.
One thing is for sure on my truck, Medic. It likes good old Rotella 15-40. And when I use DK she likes it even more. The last run I made was a 200 mile jog with dk in the tank and I made 24mpg. I had a nice tail wind and was doing ~68mph, 2k rpm on mine. I would use it in every tank, but dk is a little hard to find in my area.

That's good mpg, getting in my neighborhood. If you were to try about 500 miles at 63 mph you will blow me away. Are you sure you topped the tank? All of my highway mpg reports are on trips from Charlotte to Buffalo, which takes you through what is the best the east of the Mississippi can offer for mountains. I see you are in Texas, where you have to search far and wide for a mole hill.
