Intake cooling thought

Ok so i was trying to think of how to cool the intake on an I6. What if i ran some copper tubing and spun it around the intake manifold on the spots that are like this | | | | | |(i think the word is intake runners that is what im talking about) maybe 3 or four times and then connect them to a Co2 spray kit thing and somehow make a return line. Do yall think that could work?

it would certainly cool your runners, but unless you have a big supply of CO2 you are wanting to waste, you're not gonna cool it for very long. the problem with forced cooling of engines, is that to keep them cool, you end up having to run some kind of motor (people talked of using a small refrigeration unit from a refrigerator with the motor mounted on a bracket). this means that you end up using up all that energy you made to run the motor. when you count in friction and such, you use more energy than you end up making in most cases.

Active cooling of he intake is pointless unless you're building a drag motor. CO2 would get hella expensive if you tried to run it all the time. Best bet for normal use would be to wrap the exhaust manifolds in fiberglass heat tape to keep radiant heat from the intake. Bending up a polished stainless or aluminum heat shield as a barrier would help out a lot too. Neither would cost much $, just takes time to do. After switching to EFI manifolds my underhood temps were pretty bad, wrapped them with heat tape and noticed a significant decrease. also have a heat insulating spacer plate setup between the intake and carb. Again... cheap but effective.

what if i hooked up the said CO2 system and only used t at the track...decreased intake temps increase HP right?

oh and what if i could get and intake similar to the cliffor dual quad but more like this with the runners going down from up higher and then curving into the head. That would keep temps cool as well but may be expensive. With that and header wrap temps should be nice

i suppose if you only used it at the track, it wouldn't be as bad, and would probably be worth a try. i remember watching some of the older drag racers packing ice on and around their intake to try and get the same effect. i'm not sure if they ran with a bag of ice on the intake, or took it off on the line, i suppose it wouldn't make that much of a differenece in the 8 second-15 seconds down the track temperature wise, though i'm sure it helped the times.

i'm sure it would work, i've never tried fabbing up one myself. if you've got the time to burn and the skills to make it work, go for it

for about 150 $, you guys have been beat to the punch....designengineering (thats the website too... designengineering . com) has created an intake system, has a teardrop shaped object in the middle of it, and when you hit the button, it basically freezes over, cooling intake air by up to 60 degrees, 2 or 3 second shot will last for like 40 seconds or something, and you can refill the tank at a paintball feild. They are available on ebay as well... Just do some research, its pretty cool, and when I go forced inductions, its definately gonna be part of my system (kinda like an aftercooler for the intercooler....).
