Okay, ive got problems im my ranger first of all, when i bought it there was tim foil around the heater fuse. No problem or so I thought. I pulled it out and found that it was blown, as i had first thought. So i put a new fuse in there ( 20 amp) and thought that was the end of it. Or so I thought. Now the heater kicks on and off, and the fuse is turning black. Also the dash and cargo lights dont work and the heater light keeps going on and off. Any ideas whats going on? Is it a bad short, or a nasty Gremlin under my dash. Also, can i use any wirig harness off a '67-'72 Ford truck, or do I have to pull it off another '68 250 ranger? I would really appricate all the help i can get before i go ripping into the wiring.
Thanks a bunch you guys for all the help you've given me so far!
The fuse blowing on the heater could be a bad motor if it is draging
it will blow the fuse try unplugging the motor and then replace the fuse. The other problems sound like a headlight switch annother problem to look for is rusty fuse holders that are not makeing contact.
You can swap in a newer harness (up to 72). I swapped a 72 harness into a 67 once and I found the main things to look out for were a different ignition switch and brake light switch. This was because the 67 had some different parts. I'm not sure on a 68 but if you compare the key parts you'll be okay. I used the front inner fender harnesses as well. The rear harness plugs into all years of dash harness. With the 70-72 wiring, the emergency flasher mounts down by the choke and lighter.
Okay guys thanks for the info. The headlight switch is okay, though as the headlights and dome light work fine. The bulbs might be blown though, I haven't been able to get to them yet. But the thing i cant figure out is why the cargo light will NOT work. Its hooked up and the bulb is good but it still will not work. Another qucik question. On the fuse box i have two empty spade connections. What do they go to and do they have something to do with my electrical woes? And where can i get some repalcement Licence plate lights? Mine are all Smashed in and busted up. Thanks for all your help!
I sooooooooooooooooo feel your pain. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE...replace your wiper switch!!! When the switch goes bad, which is from 30+ years of service, it searches for a ground. The nearest one is the heater. IT COST ME MY WIPER MOTOR BEFORE I FOUND. I had this EXACT problem...hope it helps.
Okay thanks ken ill do that as soon as i can but the wipers will still work with a bad switch right? And does anyone have any idea on the two empty connectors on the fuse box i described eariler?
Nope not a farmer! Do ya think that those two empty spades could be for the radio? I looked all under that dash and i coudn't find the radio hookups anywhere! (The speaker was gone too!! Fancy that!)
My radio has an inline fuse holder, but I am not sure if that's how it came. The lettering should be on the fuse block to help you with what goes where. I'll look at mine tomorrow and post what goes where.
