Last night me and a buddy took out the old Ford sound system that came with my 1991 F250 and put in a new one. We had a little trouble figuring out the wiring but we finally got it right (in theory). After a couple hours of fussing with it, we got the system functioning and we replaced the old speakers with the ones supplied with the stereo (even replaced the speaker wire). Since the speaker wire wouldn't fit in the shrink wrap in the door, we loose-wired it. After all is done and done, the dash lights will not come on when we turn on the headlights...we didn't even mess with anything under the dash other than the stereo. The wires that are on the new stereo are even labeled, so I am not sure if we wired it up to the old ford wires right or not (we used a tester to find the hot wires btw)... Also, when turning on the lights the stereo will flicker off then come back on. What that means I don't know...What is wrong with it? ANY help would be appreciated!
PS- I can supply pics and more info if needed, anything to help!
My first thoughts are that you have the stereo hooked into the circuit that dims the factory stereo display when the dash lights are on.
Does the new stereo hold memory with the key off? Does the stereo work properly otherwise? Sound through all speakers? Check your power and ground sources. See if anything changes with a test light when you turn the headlights on and try to dim the dash lights. Did you hook up a power antenna or amp wire coming from your stereo?
This is the best reason to buy one of those premade factory harness adaptors for aftermarket stereos.
thanks for the wiring diagram! I found that we put the red wire to the Dash light dimmer wire...DOH! thanks for the tips guys, all the responses helped alot. All the other wires work and all the tail/head lights work. Just the dash is out, gonna go out and re-wire it so I'll let ya know how it goes...
