Garage doors

Posted this on shopfloortalk.com also thought I might get any thoughts on it from here also.

I am about to build the doors for the barn and was thinking of using 1 or 1 1/2 steel square tubing for frames on the large doors skinned with 1/2 plywood, and 1" on the access doors.

Use pressure treated plywood (outdoor sheating) and make sure you seal it real good with a weather resistant sealant or primer.

I'm about about to do this myself, I have one garage panel that's falling apart from rot.

Not planning on making them lift though, they will swing open like old fashioned barn doors.

Yeah, but the door I'm fixing is made of 2" thick oak from 1941. Plywood weighs nothing in comparison!

Kind of a rope burning at both ends. The larger the door, the heavier gauge metal it needs not to sag. The larger gauge the metal is, the more weight there is hanging out on the hinges and the support/bolts that hold the hinges. ..

1 1/2 inch square tubing welded properly will hold a lot of weight when braced at a 45 degree angle in to itself. But, the door will only be as good as the hinges, and the hinges will only be as good as what they are secured to.
