i bought a new melling HV pump to go in the 76 ford truck i just got , the truck hasbad oil pressure and the stock pump is very worn so it is not pumping well. my question is the new pump came with a high pressure spring. should i use it? the engine has about 246k on it and runs well but has 10 psi at 700 rpm and tops out at 35 psi at 3500 rpm. would the high pressure spring cause any damage?
f390gh, you'll be fine with the higher pressure spring. What will happen is the bypass will open less often than if the pressure was lower. And if you have lots of clearance on the bearings, the bypass may not open at all. I have a 390 with .0035 on the mains and .003 on the rods and am running the M57 HV pump, the engine was built with all used parts. At idle when warm I have 20~25 lbs, with a max of 55 at 5K. I spent 250$ on the whole engine and it has been just fine for almost ten years now. DF @ work on lunch
I wouldn't bother with the high pressure spring. All it'll do in that motor is increase cold oil pressure and high rpm oil pressure. It wont do a thing for idle oil pressure, that's more a function of volume. The fact that it's a high volume oil pump will help a lot more than the spring.
You could put it in; I dont think it would hurt anything, but I wouldn't waste the time. The stock spring should provide plenty of pressure for any motor. What you're after with that motor is volume, and you've already got that in the high volume oil pump.
