Hood Pins

Yesterday, is was driving down the road about 50 mph and the hood decides to open and slam all the way back hitting just above the windshield. It was very loud and it doesnt take much for the 4 wheel drum brakes to lock up and the truck slide about 60 feet. So is there anyway to hold the hood down better such as hood pins or another way so that i dont have to worry about crapping my pants again.

i started using a cable lock for JC Whitney after that happened to me. ZX129635P is the part #, it runs $42.99, but its worth it. the hood has tried again but it wasn't able to fly all the way up because i put this lock on it. plus it helps to stop people from just walking off with you battery and other parts too.

There are two hood locks - the main lock and a safety catch. If both are in good shape your hood should never fly open. Sometimes people adjust the main lock too low and it fails to hold the hood, or it gets a grove rubbed in it.

I have a 1972 with over 250 K miles and have had no problems with this - others have more than 500K on their trucks. Keep the locks oiled and adjusted and they work fine.

bigman, First you start off by lubing your latching mech. and making sure it is lined up. There is a safety latch in there and if the owner/operator keeps a look out, what happened to you is darn near impossiable to pull off. I think Ford still offers the secondary latch. I know my sons 04 has it.

IMHO, Keeping the hood latch working rates up there with keeping the oil checked and the tires properly inflated. Over the last 40 years I have seen my hood latch come loose several times but the safety latch always worked. After getting after it, I don't think that has happened in the last 5 years or so.

there are springs that keep the hood closed.
