I finally scanned my truck. It showed that bank 1 and bank 2 o2 sensors are bad. Im pretty pressed for cash and will be driving from tx to pa in about two weeks. Will changing the sensors out before leaving make up for the cost of extra gas I will have to spend w/o changing them? The truck is a 99 f150 w/ 4.2.
if you have a vacuum leak, you will show lean. if you change sensors, it will still show lean. If you have a way to get into the data stream, check long fuel trim 1 and 2. Ideally you want this down as close as 0% that you can get it. Vacuum leaks will get it up to 20- 28%
After replacing all 4 of my o2 sensors to the tune of $200, my lean codes dissipeared and i got a whopping 0.5 more miles per gallon. Make sure you check for vacume leaks, if you don't have any then if is up to you to determine if changing them now is worth the cost.
unless you have an expensive smoke machine, while the motor is running, spray carb cleaner around gaskets, components. If you find a vacuum leak, the motor will run different.
