Where to attach the cherry picker?

Hey guys, I'm swapping in a rebuilt long block (360 FE engine) into my F-150.

I searched but couldn't find this info...

Where should I hook the cherry picker, on the engine?

I want to pull the engine and transmission together (it's a c6 auto I think).

Where is a good place to hook onto and how do I hook on, any ideas?

I have a nice 2 ton cherry picker with a load balancer.

I use the two bolts next to were the carb bolts on, without the carb, in the middle of the intake. It is a good balance point to work off of. I juct bolt a chain right to it.

OK thanks for the tip.

What if I wanted to do it with the intake removed? What would be a good place then?

You jcan still use the bolt holes for the intake in the heads.

While it's done all the time, I'm not particularly fond of using the carb mount or intake bolt holes in the heads.

I'd much rather use the bolt holes on the back of the passenger-size head and on the front of the driver's side head (or vice-versa, I forget which end of the head has the bolt holes in it).

On my '74 highboy, I never had a problem doing it that way.

Of course, I could be wrong

Ok, do you use that location for pulling just the engine, or the engine with the tranny attached?

A guy I talked to at the repair shop reccommended that it was easier to pull the engine and tranny together, or that it was safer, less risk of screwing up the tranny or something. Do you guys agree or do you think I should just pull the engine and leave the tranny in?

Engine and trans together, I like pulling and putting them back together, less work under the truck.

Unless you take the entire grill and rad support out, you're gonna need one TALL engine lift. I have one my brother built 20 years ago from scratch to pull the 330 out of his '68 F600. With that, yes, it's possible to clear the rad support with the tranny hanging straight down. I never had the guts to put that much weight that high in the air.

But I had a 435NP. If you're talking about an automatic, well, yeah, it might be "safer" to put them together outside the truck

Even with an auto, if it were me, I'd seperate the two. Less problems, and safer for a DIY (do-it yourself).

Unless, of course, you're rebuilding BOTH the engine and tranny! If you're going to pull the tranny anyway, it's a lot less work to pull both at once. My 435NP had over 250K miles on it, and still going like clockwork, so I never had to pull it.

But seperating an FE from a C6 torque converter and leaving the tranny in there is certainly a much better alternative to removing them together.

At least, that's the way I look at it. Don't mistake my opinions as advice.

But seperating an FE from a C6 torque converter
no need to seperate the torque convertor, just pull it out with the engine and it will slip off the trans input shaft- may leak a little: read 2-4 quarts: on the ground but hey, it's easier than seperating the two...

I have a 4-point lift fixture that let's me get the front and rear of both heads. The fixture has a jack screw so you can lift in the middle and tilt the engine as much as you want and then level it up to clear everything. Then again I like toys, lots of toys to make the job easier, the easier the better.

Why am I thinking FE heads don't have bolt holes on both ends?

Talking

Krewat, I already removed the radiator, radiator support, bumper... EVERYTHING!!!!!!

There is nothing in front of my engine... It could go straight forward and out... I don't even have to lift it up, except to get it off the motor mounts....

I should take a picture, it's cool! Oh wait I did!

Well, why didn't you say that in the first place?

Do it together then...

Actually I usually put in longer intake bolts at the 4 corners. But some FE head have holes in both ends.
