As I said, I dont have the money for it now. If I could afford to drop 2500 bucks on a tranny, I would. But right now, if I can get buy on a 5 or 600 dollar converter, thats what I am going to do.
The best thing is first check it on a computer. It does sound like a TC or clutch problem. But if you are going to pull it out, then do it all. Up grade the planet gears, heavy duty TC, sonnex etc. Also put in an "electronic systems eliminator". You can get it from Freeway transmissions.
I tried to switch parts from a 4r100 to my E4OD, but it doesn't work. You can make the E4OD just as good. Just don't skimp. Do it right.
What is a electronic systems eliminator? Also what does the triculator valve and sonnex spring change actually do? How much? Thanks
Also, don't forget a burnt out taillight, turn signal or the third brake light will cause the tranny to act up. As far as E4OD to 4R100 interchange, can't be done. You can take some parts like the TC, oil pan and such, but you can't just swap tranny's.
do you have a trans temp gauge? You will be amazed at what that will do for trans problems. Mine had the same symptoms before it blew the seal and burned up. On mine it could have been clogged line that started the process and finished with a burned trans. I cant argue that because at the time I did not have a trans temp gauge. Best of luck
An electronic systems eliminator is a little gizmo that fools the transmission so it doesn't go into limp mode or anything like it. No matter what the different sensors say, it always gets a good signal. It keeps the line pressure right. If you look at Freeway Transmissions, they can explain it better. Cost is about $130. All my trucks with an E4OD have it.
Columbus diesel does NOT do transmissions. They said on the phone that all they sell is the little stuff, and just a few at that. They said to go get a jasper tranny, lasts longer and better than rebuilt since its a reman.... Thanks for all the info....
mine was slipping after a rebuild and all it was is a torq converter lockup selinoid was bad. they replaced the selinoid pack and it has been fine ever since.
Sorry Todd, I just spoke with Columbus Diesel Supply and you are correct they are not doing qualified transmission work there, I have since adjusted the notes on my referral map.
Let me know if you would like me to refer you to another BD dealer in the area that can assist you. There is a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum and I noticed that there is some good educated posts up here... Good Luck Todd
Since price seems to be a big concern, first thing I'd do is put in a manual switch to lock the converter. This would test the electronic & mechanical parts related to T/C lockup. If it works, check the wiring to the TPS (tranny position sensor) switch on the driver's side of the tranny; PCM may not realize what gear its supposed to be in. One way to confirm possible problems here is to check the action of the neutral safety switch; does the truck start in neutral if you wiggle the gear selector? If it (the manual T/C switch) doesn't work, install a cheap replacement converter to tide you over until bucks are sufficient to do the tranny right. It's also possible, though I'd never heard of it until the last post from 7.3burnoutbuddy, that the T/C clutch solenoid in the tranny went south. A solenoid pack can be had for less than $200.
after driving, and a pretty intense checkup, found otut that almost everyone here was correct, it is the torque converter. On the lookout now for a replacement. Thinking about the banks, can get it for a coll grand out the door including taxes at my local speed shop. Still trying to decide if I shoudl go ahead and get the pressure system too, or let the triple disc muddle thru...any opinions on that?
put my new converter in today. Took me a little less than 5 hours, stopped a few times to get a beer, etc... but all went really smooth. That is, until I went to start it. Couldnt figure out for the life of me why it would not even get the starter to click. I didn thave to remove the starter or anything, so I figured a loose wire in the harness. after unplugging and plugging everything back in, still hasd same problem. I was just about to start cutting the loom when I thought, "better make sure that the selector didnt move somehow, make sure its in park." DUH!!!!!! it wasnt. Put it in park, fired up. let idle. Took it around the block and the shifts are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better. You can even feel the lcokup engage and everything works like a new truck again. I still need to get it flushed out again. Taking to to a garage this time to get the cooler done REAL well. I am VERY glad to get my dually back. Now all I need is fron ttires, and that happens tomrrow at 8 am. What a few days. Truck will be like new again. I cant wait......
Wow 5 hours while drinking beer thats pretty good, explains the overlook on the shift indicator though LOL, good that you caught it before long. Most do not realize what a good convertor is capable of until they install one in their own towrig.
