How hard does your PSD work towing?

I was towing an 8,000 # mini excavator on a tandom axel trailer (add 2500# for the trailer) and my `02 F350 was really working at it.

Sure it would pull it, but hitting a mild hill on the highway, and the truck would down shift to and rev to 3,000 rpms to maitain 55 mph.

It would cruise at 65 mph on the flats, and small hills.

I have a set of gages that I plan to install as soon as I find the 25th and 26th hour of each day.

Also have a DP Chip, again have to wait till I find the time.

I know you need to watch the egt's, and won't install the chip with out the gages.
I will base line the data from the gages, with the otherwise stock truck, before adding the chip.

My question is for those who tow 10,000 pounds or more regularly, does your truck struggle to maintain speed on hills (4% grade or better)?

For a stock truck - that sounds about right... You will notice a HUGE difference with the chip - MUCH more power and less downshifting!!!

A few months ago, I had to drive my truck around stock (NO chip) again for 2 weeks - and it couldn't maintain speed running around EMPTY - I wouldn't even WANT to think about towing with a stock truck ever again!!!

You are gonna LOVE that chip - glad to hear you are waiting for the guages!

I towed my 6000-6500 lb travel trailer this weekend with my stock 2002 F250 7.3L. On the interstate, with OD off, the truck really enjoyed going about 60-63mph at about 2300-2400 rpm. It evened out the hills nicely, did very well. There was more power available if I'd really needed it.

I tow my HUGE 40 ft 5th wheel around all the time behind my stock 2001 F350 PSD and it will pull that thing going 80 mph no problem. And if you put your foot in it it will pull the hills just great.

I have 4:88's and when pulling my trailer I still have to shift down with stock program. Add some power and the need to shift gets reduced, but it's still a lot of weight to move.
I don't go over 70 mph because I have a lot of frontal area and the radiator fan starts to lock up due to the heat generated by the motor, even on level ground. So I just stay in the right hand lane.

I pull about 7000 lb only downshifts when it gets to some really steep climbing hills, normal rolling hills or medium ones it doesn't shift and my truck is pretty much stock, except for the big air filter, wicked wheel and some gauges. im usualy driving between 100-115 km/h (60-70 mph?) all in all the truck really impresses me when it's pulling

i was regularly towing 24k gross (as heavy as 28k according to DOT scales ) with my 96cc 4x4 3.55 gears with a tandem axel gn trailer. With 400hp tow burn, big turbo and big intercooler i never had to worry about downshifts or egts.

Thumbs up 9500 # fifthwheel

I have a 2002 Bone stock...except for the Kwik filter, CCV mod and a huge 6.0 tranny cooler. I travel up through Asheville NC on I40 and up through Kentucky on I75 and maintain 70-75 with the cruise on with no problems.....I had a V10 and on the same hills on the same route, it would hunt between OD and 3rd gear...the PSD stays in OD. I also crest the pass in Asheville at about 65 where the V10 would struggle to maintain 50....I have a Crew Cab long box dually with a 4:10 rearend.......I also have the high wing air deflector on top of the cab that supposedly is good for more MPG, but I just get more SPEED!! I would rather run 10 MPH faster and get there sooner than creep along and get better milage...I still get about 10 MPG even at that speed and I gross out about 16,500 I believe........
