Well I just finished taking the steering wheel off of my F100. The last owner had it upside down for some reason...I put it back on and that's great but I'm having some trouble with the horn wire and spring things.
I cant seem to figure out how it goes back together- (it was a couple of days from coming apart to finally going back together.)
I got the wheel on. There is a "cup" looking piece that the nut sits in and that has the triangle shaped wire "clip" that holds the horn button on I believe. Then I have a brass looking flat washer with a hole in the center and a cutout then going to the side. I also have a gray piece that that looks kind of like a small clutch pressure plate.
I think the bronze piece goes on first then the pressure plate type piece but when I run the wire through it it's always rubbing on something making the horn sound. I did find something that looks like a small bushing that I think might go in the center off the brass piece as some kind of bushing...? Should there be some spring to keep the horn wire from staying down? Have I got something screwed up or did I lose something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jay
Hey Jay, from the steering wheel out, it should go cup, nut inside cup, triangular clip in the 3 holes in the cup sides, then the cup cover. The wire runs through the column and out the bottom of the steering gear box. The bakalite insulated contact at the top of the wire goes inside the hole on top. The gray "pressure plate" is your spring, and it is also the contact piece. It goes over the cup and lid with the center resting on the contact tip of the wire. Install it so that the prongs rest on the center point, and the outer ring is elevated off the cup and lid. When you push your horn button, it pushes the outer edge of that grey spring down onto the top of the cup and grounds the center wire out so that it completes the horn curcuit. If I've confused you, I am sorry. I'll also scan the image of the asssembly, and post it in my next reply.
I think I'm getting it, but you know what they say about a picture....
If you could post one that'd be great otherwise I just took some pictures this evening and maybe I can post them and get your opinion. I really appreciate your help.
