I decided to change my manual steering to power in my 70 f100. I purchased a harmonic balancer with a four bolt three groove pulley on line. The old balancer on my 302 would not come close to lining up the timing correctly, had to time it by ear. I put the new balancer on and had to shim the pulley out 7-32nd in order to line the grooves up with the water pump pulley. I put the timing light to it and the marks were still way off, so I timed it by ear. I then turned my attention to the power gear box that I purchased used. It came with the pitman arm attached along with the ball stud from the drag link. I have tried hammering and useing a jaw puller to remove this stud from the lower pitman arm. It will not budge. How do I get the thing off! And, will having shimed out my pulley do any damage to my motor? I noticed a slight wobble to the pulley like it is slightly out of round.
Thanks All,
Bruce
A pitman arm puller is the best way to get them off. Tighten the bolt, then tap on the sides of the pitman arm with a hammer to knock it loose.
A bent or out of position pulley can cause an imbalance to the engine, might be best to get the pulleys as a set either new or off used engine...
If you have the correct harmonic balancer on the engine the timing marks will be correct unless the balance ring has slipped because the rubber ring is shot.
Or the dizzy is put in wrong, like a tooth, or several teeth, out of position.
Which to me seems more likely than the balancer being wrong. Unless it's from a 351W & not a 5.0L [302 cid].
