I have a 360 that i want to get rebuilt into a 390. I am not able to do it so i need shop to do it. What i am wondering is what do u all think a good or fair price is to do this. What i basiclly want the mechanic to do is take every thing apart and just replace every thing that needs replacing. And make it a 390.
Oh yea, im sure he is going to get a stock rebuild kit, so whats a few parts that i can replace the stock with, performance parts. cus i want it to be fast. So what do u all think?
There is really no telling how much it is going to cost. There are a lot of variables. The engine may be in desperate need of a good bore or it may just need a hone. You will have to buy a new crank, rods and pistons. The heads may need major valve guide work among other things. How "fast" is "fast. I spent about $4500 on my 390 and I did all the work myself. I could have spent way less and still have had a truck that moves pretty good but not like it does now. I would probably ask your favorite mechanic what the maximum amout would probably be and plan on paying at least close to that amount.
Well i dont wanna spend 4,500 on this. I just wanna do a few things to make it have better pickup off the line. What about if i just get him to rebuild it stock, any ideas?
Hi
I am currently converting my 360 to a 390. I dis-assembled the engine myself and am have a local shop doing the machine work. The heads cost me a little over $300. That's with all new hardened seats and 5 valves replaced, new guides and seals. A short block build up is $700. That's with me providing the 390 crank and rods. The build up includes new 390GT profile cam and lifters, bored out with new 9:1 CR pistons, bearing, etc. The shop will assemble the bottom end. I was going to do it but I will get a warrentee if the shop assembles it. So to sum it up $300 heads, $700 bottom end and $200 for the 390 crank and rods. Plus some gaskets, might as well change the clutch while it's apart,.....etc.
This will give ya an idea of what a semi-stock re-build can cost.
For $2000 you should be able to get some higher compression pistons and go with a hotter cam. Just the cubes will really make a difference that will make a big difference off of the line.
My 60 ft time is 2.303 at best. This has nothing to do with my engine though. When I had a stock worn 360 in there I still was only doing 2.4 60 ft times on an 18.4 sec 1340ft.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Apr-02 AT 02:10 PM (EST)]Well my plan now is to get my 360 rebuilt into a 390 and just get a high performance cam and intake. And a new 4bbl carb... i guess like 600cfm. sound good?
Thanks jor and I think that would be a good setup. My neighbor went and got a 4bbl intake from a scrapyard for 15 bucks and got a cheap PAW cam. He did get forged pistons (wants nitrous) though for about 230 bucks. His runs great and has more than enough power to have fun in his 65 fairlane. He is pushing at least 350HP and didn't spend a ton of $ to do it.
yea thats what i plan on doing. Ok im still not a 'master mechanic'. i ahve seen a lot of talk about bore size and am still confused about what it is. I see that your bore size is .60 over ratsmoker. Isnt that a lot. What is mine now if its stock. What should i get it to if im gunna have a high per. intake, carb, and cam. Tahnks your a great help!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Apr-02 AT 03:07 PM (EST)]Bore size refers to the diameter of the cylinders. Your stock bore is 4.050". Most FE blocks can go .060 over depending on the amount of core shift it had during casting. I have a 1974 FT block which generally have thicker walls and have reinforced main webs. I would only bore your block over as much as is needed. You aren't going to see a huge or even noticeable power increase by going from std bore to .060 over. My block was already .030 over so I just took it out to 60. Here is a desktop dyno of the neighbors 390 I was talking about.
Ok, cool so is there a real good cam, carb, and intake combo that you know of. I just dont wanna mix a bunch of parts together and get a gas guzzling slow truck.
Try and find a 4bbl manifold from a 390GT. It will have a big "S" on the intake. If not, any 4bbl. manifold will do. I think the crane 343941 or 343801 cam is about as big as you want to go with stock heads. I would run about a 650cfm holley vaccum seconday carb. You can get a set of nicely rebuilt heads from www.desertperformance.com with the CJ valves for about 600 bucks if yours are in real bad shape. Make sure you do the oiling mods to the block. Also make sure you use ARP bolts in at least the rods.
