Sholuld i follow chiltons directions on how to change the transmission fluid and transfer case fluid? What fluid should i use?Should i use a treatment? No metal tags.I dont think the fluids have been changed for some time.I checked the transmission fluid level and a lot came pouring out red.Chiltons says it should be at the fill hole level. There is a black coating of dry oil near the drain plug on the transmission.I noticed shifting dose not get easy untill it warms up.50s and below temps take a little longer. Some times when iam in second or third gear it sounds like the 4x4 is sort of engaged, but its not. Thanks for any help.
Use what Ford says to in the tranny. The level is fine if you pulled the plug and some came running out. The stains by the drain are from dirt collecting on the residue from past changes that wasn't cleaned up. No need to treat a manual tranny for anything. The reason that shifting is hard at lower temps is due to the fluid being old and/or incorrect.
