I have a 2004 FX4, 5.4, with out climate control. I have taken it to ford several times and they say it is fine. I know that it is not. I have problems cooling down the vehicle when it is 80 outside. I know I have a full 134a charge and about twice a year the system will work great. Most of the time I am wondering why a 35k truck has a AC that doesnt blow cold. My question is has anyone fixed this problem and how. I know I am not the frist.
Are you sure you have a full charge of R134A? Did you check it yourself? The reason I am asking is that there have been numerous posts about 2004 models having less than a full charge from the facory. Maybe they added too much. Excess freon can cause a decrease in efficiency also. This does not explain why it would work well sometimes, but not work well others. If this is under warranty, have you tried another dealership? I hope you get it worked out.
my 2000 f150 cant keep up on AC when it gets above 75.... it was fully charged but the guy i talked to claimed it was the "little door/device" down by the firewall that lets the ac into the cab must be jammed so it doesnt open all the way...... they figured it would cost close to a grand not including parts to tear the dash out and pretty much disassemble the cab to get to it
Mine does the same thing, it couldn't keep up on hot days. The best thing to try is have the dealer discharge the sytem and evacuate the system and recharge it. I am waiting for warmer weather to see if mine is finally fixed. If you just add mor freon you may over charge the system and then it may not work also. The best thing to do is the evac and recharge.
I have a similar problem with my 05 Lariat Screw, I noticed it last summer. It really became apparent when I rode in my neighbor's Honda CRx and the Honda was much colder! I took my truck to the dealer in the fall of 05 and he said he purged and recharged the system. Haven't used it much till now and it is just as bad if not worse than last summer and it's not even that hot yet. I plan on taking it in again real soon and was wondering if I can request any specific tests on the system, i.e. compressor regulator pressure etc. I was hoping there was a TSB by now since it seems that a lot of folks are having similar problems. I'm afraid I will get the dreaded "thats normal" excuse.
There is a TSB I believe for up to a 10 or 15 degree difference in temp. coming out of the middle vents compared to the vents on the outsides of the dash. Is there a difference in temp between the vents?
mine is not too bad...it just doesn't get in a hurry to cool things off, but normally at about the end of a 2 hour drive when its 85 or 90 outside its turned down low because it gets too cold...
I just got a 06 f150 screw and I have found that the ac wasnt as cool as my 03 f150 screw. my 03 will still freeze your nuts off but the 06 will not. I took it into the ford dealership since it only had about 2000 miles on it and they said they had to replace the compressor clutch. It still does not seem to be cooling well. The truck is a basic truck that my boss bought for me. Its nice, but I was wondering maybe because it is an xl and just a basic truck they also skimped on other things like the ac system. I noticed that the 06 is a much cheaper made truck and not as high quality as my 03. Does anyone else have an opinion on that. Has the quality been diminishing or is it just me?
dqscott, I feel the sheet metal has gotten thinner and most of the truck overall is more flimsy than all the F150's and 250's that I have had in the past. However, the new technology is certainly welcomed. Anyone else have an opinion on this. By the way, I did not mean to change the A/C subject of this thread. I am simply answering dqscott's question. Thanks!
I read the previous long, long thread last summer on AC performance. I bought an AC thermometer, the one with the 6" spear probe. I placed the probe down the vents and the read in top summer was a start of approx 120º, with a final low of 52º. With my RCab I analyzed that the large, sloping windshield that acts as a heat radiator both in front and slightly overhead allows heat to radiate into the cab. When the vents put out 52º, what happens to cool air is at the mercy of the heat trying to enter the cab via the glass and metal.
I live in an area where summer heats run from 90º to 110º. Upon turning the AC on I crack the windows a bit for a few seconds to force some warm air out. Then after a few minutes after the cab has cooled some I will crack the window again for approx 10 seconds to push the last of the warm air out.
I have had past Ford pickups where the AC seemed to work more efficiently, but the cab and windshield configuration was more adaptable to heat prevention......I am satisfied with what I have. 52º is a hard act to improve upon.
