power loss on highway
Need some help here please.I have a 96 f150,4.9 six cyl,150000 km,5 speed. The truck seems to work fine in town, but when i go out on the highway, and try to accelerate, there is no power.I can put the peddle to the floor ,but it acts like its not getting enough fuel.Had a rusted gas tank, changed that, thought it might help ,but it didnt .New filter also. Also it starts hard sometimes, then shakes and goes on,but finally picks up the fuel and is ok.
Any ideas?

I think you could either have a bunch of crap getting pulled up against the fuel pump intake or fuel filter by the sustained speeds on the hiway, or a partially plugged cat.
Had something similar on a car many years ago. The fuel filter was mounted vertically and was clear plastic. Reving the engine, I could see the debris pull up against the filter and restrict the fuel flow. When it dropped back to idle, the junk fell off the filter and everything was fine.
A vacumn gauge can help determine if the cat is restricting exhaust. Of course, pulling the codes is almost always the first step in problem solving.
