How hard is it to replace the starter on a 360 with stock exhaust manifolds? Mine acts up too frequently to trust, particularly in cold weather. Even with a full battery, sometimes it just "clicks," but then it will be fine a few minutes later.
Unhook the solenoid wire from the starter, drop the
3 bolts that hold it in place and pop her out. Reassemble
in reverse order, John's right. About 15 minutes ought to do it.
i find it to be pretty easy, it just takes a little bit of patience, just be careful not to cramp your hand up. If you have ratchet wrenches that should make it a WHOLE lot easier.
You may consider rebuilding your old starter yourself. If you use a junkyard or reman starter you could end up with someone else's problem
I did mine last year. The rebuild kit is less than $20.
It comes with bushings, brushes, a starter drive and instructions.
It only took me a few hours to rebuild it. The only thing aside from normal tools that you need is a soldering iron. Pay particular attention to getting everything clean as you reassemble it and you'll have a starter thats better then new.
The starter went out on my '72 F100 360. I've replaced starters before, and thought it'd be no big deal!
I got the two lower bolts out no problem, but I can't find the third bolt!! It should be on the top, since the block is too close for it to be on the inside. The tranny dipstick and exhaust manifold are so close I can't see very well in there, but I can't feel a bolt.
