I am completely rewiring my '69 Ranger, and decided to get a harness from Ron Francis Wire Works (http://www.wire-works.com), mainly because some people on this board have reported bad experiences with the somewhat cheaper Painless Wiring kits. Ron Francis will set up a custom harness for you -- you just tell them what vehicle you have, what engine, carb or injected, what steering column, points or electronic ignition, etc. You also get to specify the plugs for gauge and light connections, etc.
Anyway, one of the questions you have to answer is what type of alternator you are using. They will set up a harness for my FE-equipped truck for either the original equipment Ford alternator or one of many others, including a late model "one wire" alternator.
I seem to recall hearing that there are advantages to switching to a one-wire alternator. Can anyone explain what they are? Would my existing alternator mounting brackets and pulley work? If not, where would I get the brackets and pulley for mounting a late model alternator to a FE?
Thanks for your help!

Use of a Delco one wire eliminates the external voltage regulator you currently use because it has an internal regulator. Another advantage is that they can be found at almost any parts store for around $35.
As far as it bolting up using existing brackets, you may have to increase the size of your spacer on the pivot bolt. Just make sure your pulleys line up and it will be alright.
