I've got a 72 F100 with a 360 that the starter went out on . I've replaced a few starters over the years, but this one has me stymied! (I know it's supposed to be easy.)
I've got the lower and side bolts off with a 1/2" socket, but can't find the third bolt. The block is too close for it to be on the inside, and there's barely enough room on top to see that there's no bolt there (I think!).
I use a 3/8 ratchet with two long extensions (5 inches each) and a deep well socket. You need to go in between the starter and motor mount. You can feel it with your finger and then guide the socket on.
Bob is right-there is another bolt on the top of the starter that's pretty well hidden from view. I just removed my starter this past weekend, and I used a pair of extensions and a universal joint to get it out.
If you get behind the tire and reach in with a standard wrench it is real easy. That's how I do mine with headers anyway. I don't know if a manifold would block the angle.
It is a lot easier than it appears. Each time I am amazed as to how easy it is to remove and install that top bolt. I install the top bolt with the bolt in the socket and multiple extensions (no u-joint) and send it down the side of the block and somehow land the hole every time. It is almost like there is a hidden funnel back there that sends the bolt and socket right on target.
Yup, I use long extensions without a u-joint too. Right along the side of the block. I have a 360 with manifolds and a 360 with cheapo headers and the top bolt is accessed the same for both of them.
