I am seriously looking at picking up a 1993 ranger with 170k on the clock.
I am sure it is not tip top, so I go in knowing I will have some maintenance to do. I would love to get another 40k out of it in the next 2 years.
I have an 01 Expy and really like the Ford durability and I can pick up this ranger for cheap.
So, here is my question to all you ranger guys.
When you think of a 93 with 170k on it, what are the things you would immediatley do. Fill in the blank...
"Oh, man, I would chnge the <blank> and fix the <blank>"
I am going to do tranny fluid and oil change ASAP, probably new brakes and shocks ASAP. Engine was told to me has "A small oil leak" which I will try to get taken care of as well. What else?
If the tranny fluid has never been changed you may want to leave it. At higher mileages, changing it can actually be worse for it than leaving it.
I'd make a note to do plugs/wires, check the air filter, do the rear diff fluid, tranny fluid if it's been kept up, shocks, brakes, etc. The usual stuff, and keep an eye out for anything suspicious.
My '94 with a tid over 141K had fine ball joints. So I guess it's luck of the draw. I got a pretty outstanding truck once I did obvious things, change the fluids, fix the tranny shift rail plugs, new PS pump (old one leaked), etc. Works great now. You better just check everything you can possibly see, and DEFINETLY take it for a test drive.
