I'm runnin a '79 F150 300, and the suspension is horrible. I'm not to into knowing about suspension so I could use your guys' help. I really like a stiff ride, but money is the priority. I have about $300 - $400 to spend on this. What do you think I should do, what brands do you prefer. If you could help me pick out some new shocks, that would be the first thing I wanna throw on. After that, what?
Try www.roadmaster.ca they make what is called an active suspension system. I put it on my 73 F-100. Really nice do it yourself system cost me $325 Cdn. Got rid of my wheel hop and sway instantly.
I just put monroe magnums on the front and Monroe load assists on the rear of my 78 F250. They are a 100 times better then the gabriels that were on there. I went from a marshmellow to a nice firm ride.
I just put the Monroe Gas Magnums on the front of my '76 F250 2wd and I am happy. The price was right and it beats the leaky old junk I took off. Check out Rockauto.com, they are one of the fine sponsors of the forum.
WOW, I checked our Rockauto.com, and the shocks I was looking at were $10 cheaper. I think i'll be going with either four monroe sensa-trak shocks, or 2 monroe gas-magnums for the front and 2 sensa's for the rear. What do you guys think?
Bilstien 5100's and 5125's are really stiff and great for offroading too because they dampen so well. They give the driver plenty of feedback and along with a predictable ride. They are also very fade resistant for a non-reservoir shock.
You should also check to make sure the rubber bushings in your suspension are in good shape. Shocks and springs wont help if you got crappy bushings.
You could get some roughcountry coils.
Most people don't get them, b/c they're rear stiff, but you might like them, and in the rear what time of lift does it have? Any? If it has lift springs, the take them out and put a stock set with a add a leaf and a block.
People usually want to soften their ride, and I'd say get some super flex coils and springs, but in this case, get blocks.
I had a 75 F 100 that I replaced the shocks with Monroe Gas Magnum shocks, and just like haligen said, it went from a mushy ride to a nice firm ride. It used to almost bottom out in the front if I went down the driveway too fast, but after the new shocks it rode much better.
sometimes I kinda wish I had your problem, I put RS5000's on my 250 and I guess they are ok but I think I could go without shocks and not be able to tell the difference,,,lol,,,
