I have searched and searched but cannot find out the differences in the 7.3 liter engine from year to year up to 2003. I know the info is out there somewhere. Anybody have a link?
Let's say '95 up. The forums have a gap in them. They go from 94.5 to 97 and then 99.5 to 2003. What happened from 98 to 99.5? I am mainly looking for the changes the engine went thru between the years.

There was no Superdutys made in 1998. They changed body styles, and the first one to come out was in late 98, and is referred to as an "early 99". Im not completely sure of all the differences between the early and late 99's, but I do know bigger turbo on late 99. If you have the option, and I think this is a good idea on any new design model year, go for the late 99, or 99.5 and up.
Im sure some of the more knowledgable guys will chime in with more differences.
Ok on the same note, not answered here. I have an early 99. Manufactured date is 02/98. I'm the second owner, my brother-in-law the first. All the paperwork and manuals show it as a 1999 model year. What happened to the 10 months of 1998? If it makes a difference the sticker says it was manufactured in Canada. My first thought is that it's a 1998 truck???? Not according to Ford though....

Read my post above . There were no 98 Superduty's as they changed over body styles.
Grunt0311, yep read that and understood that, but my question was what happened during the 10 months from manufacture date till sold in early 99?? Just curious, did it sit for 10 months?? Does that mean I have the good rods?? And the BIG question. When identifing parts do I go with 97 info or with 99-03 info?? I would guess 99-03. Thanks for any input....

My understanding is that during those 10 mths, nothing happend except changing the lines over for the new truck. You have the good rods, and as far as ordering parts, you should be asked what you build date is whenever you order something that is different between the early and late 99's. I have always been asked when I order parts.

If you're looking at parts, you'd go with ones listed as 99-03. If a part makes a difference for early 99 (like yours) vs 99.5-03 (such parts as turbo parts, etc.), then the selling vendor will specify the part as for early 99s or for 99.5+.
Yes, you have the "good rods" aka Forged rods, as opposed to the Powdered Metal Rods (PMR) which they switched to in around Oct 2000. Some guys have engine build dates before the supposed changeover date and engine serial number, and STILL have PMRs.... but yours beign an early 99, you definitely have forged rods.
Thanks guys for the answers. Thats funny, makes you wonder how you can sale something throughout the 98 year as a 99. Hmmmm I got a 2006 model Triumph Spitfire in the backyard that I need to sell. Anyone interested
It's been done a few times over the years by several manufacturers. Evidently all you have to do it wait until after the normal release date for new vehicles and you can market it as a half year, or the following year.
Of course, that's pure speculation.
If it were a TR-6 I'd be interested. 6'3" and 280 won't fit into a spitfire.
