i have read in this forum about how changing gears make some difference on trucks, i dont know much about this im looking for some guidance. i got a 05 fx4 5.4L with 3.73 gears with stock tires can i change to lower size like 4.56 and feel it? looking for better thr response and more hp. I already got some mods like tunner, intake, headers, throttle body spacer and flowmaster.
sounds more like you want to go drag racing . 4:30 will do you fine. but be advised this is not a do it my self job and is costly esp. in a 150 with ifs . you may be in the area of about 2k parts and labor.
and yes you will feel the difference esp.on the dyno rollers. and just so you know my v10 250. torqe shift turns 3k at 70 with 4:56's. they are more so done for towing in the heavy grade hills i live in "19 and 25%" and for smoking the hemi jerk kid thinking he can out drive a retired top fuel driver.

sounds expensive, what other mods do you think i can do to my f150 besides the S/C.. thanks for your reply.
I also have a question concerning rear axle gear ratio. To maintain gas mileage and performance what rear axle ration should I have for BF Goodrich AT T/A 285/70/17 or 265/70/17? Which is the better tire anyways?
Keep in mind changing gears will not give you more HP. They will just allow your truck to transfer its power at a quicker rate, you are not actually adding HP. You will increase your rpms at a quicker rate helping the motor and tranny not work as hard! Although I believe they are the best upgrade for performance!!! 4.56 might be alittle steep with stock tires, now if you upgrade to 33" or 35" tires...great choice! Like CAPTCHAS said 4.30s might be a better choice with stock tires. Considering you have 3.73s, 4.10 gears wouldnt be much of a difference...4.30s would be good.
Cavtrooper06...either tire is fine, your just increasing in size slightly not much of a difference. What gears do you have now? 3.55 or 3.73s probably! 4.10s would prob help in city mileage because your truck wont downshift as much and have to work as hard. But as said before, if you have 3.73s, it wont be much a difference for the money...go 4.30s with stock tire sizes. Or 4.56 if you go larger like said before!

stag beat me to the post and i have to agree. while you may think the price steep it's well spent money going to a lower ratio like 4:30's . a s/c well that another big bite and another large amount of well spent cash "IMM" as the modular ford motors respond very wel to adding boost for power.
with 150's, i think some one i have met and is well known for racing 150's is johnny lightening out here in the east in PA. the 150 can be turned into one heck of a street beast if you are willing to spend the coin man. gears and super charger watch out hemi kid.
IMM go the gears before a whipple kit or which ever then be the king of your towns area.good luck man you have your self a nice ride
Navioasis...from the research I have done and from other peoples posts and personal results, I think those numbers are pretty high in the "rpm" range of that chart. Try Randys Ring and Pinion website...the calculator on there was dead on the money for "rpms." I have an 02 FX4, auto, with 35s, still stock gears 3.55, putting all that info in with whatever "mph" you want to calc...the rpms it calculated were exactly what my truck was turning dead on!!! If your gonna go larger tires as well, or even still with stock tires, put in whatever gear your thinking and it will be right on for the rpms. That way letting you know what rpms youll be turning at what speed with your new gears! That chart appeared to be alittle misleading to me, its numbers were kinda high in my "real life" situation! I think Randys Ring Pinion will give you a more exact calc. Just my thoughts, Hope this helps alittle more!

on the nose again.i use and get gear sets from randys for the shop when i do them. he has to be the best for right on help all the time. and those yukon gear sets so far have been with in about .005 and.006 on every set up plus no noise .
I went to Randys entered 4.56 with 31 tall tire at 70 mph came out to 2450 rpm do you think thats to many revs at 70 mph ?? this change from the stock gear would sure help getting out of the hole i have a 06 5.4 hd dont drive much and usually city driving let me know what you guys think thanks don

Do it .......you will love the power. I was running 30" tires with 4.56 and my truck was damn fast..Running 33.5" Nitto Tg and they sure robbed the power
Just make sure you get a good cai (airforce 1 or Airaid and Volant) not a mit good free flowing exhaust (magnaflow I like aeroturbine) not slowmaster they suck and a good tune (diabloSport some of the best custmer service.. SCT and Edge)that will lower your rpm's a bit at least it did for my truck
I wouldnt want to turn 2500rpms at 70mph. But thats your own preference, its all what your looking for. Like 2004 SCREW said...you will pretty much have a very fast truck! But I bet the gas sucks, haha! And IMO save your money on the cold air kit...your stock setup works fine, volant would prob be best due to its design...but most cold air kits..."arent really cold air kits" your stock setup draws more cold air in then they do!

The only two cold air intakes that have dyno # are AF1 and Airaid 25 RWHP for the AF1 and 20 RWHP for the Airaid
