Replace '97 Explorer 2wd engine with '98 4x4 engine ?
I'm putting a '98 Explorer 4.0L SOHC 4x4 engine into my "97 Explorer 4.0L SOHC 2WD truck. All kinds of Transmission codes came up. O/D light is blinking as well. It indicates that a solenoid may be bad or sensor malfunctioning but I haven't had trouble before the replacement.
Here's the million dollar question. The harness wiring on the 4x4 engine has more pins to the tranny plug-in. So, I'm thinking that I need to to take the old wire harness off my original engine since it's a 2wd, and use it on the 4x4 engine since the harness plugs have less wiring pins to it. Makes sense? Something is throwing the CPU off. What else could it be ??
I used the wire harness from the 97 engine and put it on the 98 engine and it runs great! Apparently the plug-ins for the 98 harness wasn't compatible to the 97 engine plug-ins for the tranny and CPU.
So if your exchanging engines, you can use any year from 97-2000 whether if it's a 4x4 or not. But use your wire harness from your original engine. My 2WD SOHC engine now has a 98 4x4 SOHC engine and runs perfect.
