I may have found a suitable overdrive unit for my truck. But it requires that I remove the tailshaft/tail section of the C6. Is this difficult? Does the tranny have to come out? Is there potential to mess with the quality rebuild it just had last year? Any special tools required?
My ability level: I have pulled/reinstalled the engine and replaced most of the top end, I have pulled/reinstalled the transmission, but let the pros rebuild it.
Apparently this OD unit replaces the tail piece. I am waiting for some more information about the OD unit. But, at this point, I understand that the tail piece must be removed/replaced.
If you have the 7" cast-iron tailhousing with the 4-bolt flange on the output shaft, then it should be possible; although I have never attemped it before. This housing has a ball bearing inside that holds the shaft in place. Remove the housing, and the shaft comes with it. You might need to remove the pan and valve body to support and wiggle-around the clutch drum while you install the shaft. I am not sure about how the 13" tailhousing works, but I took apart a C6 that had a shaft/adapter housing for direct (married) transfer case mounting. The C6 output shaft on this C6 was held-in by a snap ring on the shaft. To get the snap ring off, the C6 guts had to come out. Since the 13" tailhousing does not use a ball bearing to support the shaft, I have a feeling this shaft is retained in a similar manner.
