I have a 1969 360 2wd with a three on the tree. The truck is definitely not a racer but it seems pretty sluggish to me. I take the truck up to about 2200 rpm before I shift gears and it seems like i should be going at a faster speed than I am. Plus when I parked my truck today I left it in second gear and got out and the truck continued to roll a little bit.(I was not on a hill, I was in an area near the edge of a parking lot so there was a slight slope). Then when I got home I put my truck into third gear and tried to push it. I am not that strong and I was able to move it. Is it that my whole drive train is moving and thats why it rolls and I am able to push itor is my clutch bad? About how fast should I be going at 2200 rpms in first gear?(I am unsure of the gear ratios in the tranny or the rearend but I doubt that any of it has been modified to a higher ratio). How much money about would a clutch kit be and how long do you think it would take to change a clutch?
thank you for all the help

Hi Brad: If your clutch is slipping, you can usually tell. When you accelerate, the engine will speed up more then your speed is going up. How is your clutch free pedal travel? You should have about an inch before you feel any resistence. The hardest part of replacing the clutch is taking out the transmission and putting it back in. I built my own jack for this. You can do it in a day. About $125 for a new clutch. I use the diaphram type; they work smoother. Have your flywheel surfaced and replace the throw-out bearing and the pilot bearing in the crank. If the ring gear on the flywheel looks chewed up, replace it. Be sure to use a torque wrench on the clutch bolts and the flywheel bolts. And use an alignment tool when you bolt the pressure plate down. It takes the place of your transmission to keep the disc centered.
Today I went to a parts store and they said they could get me a clutch for 50 dollars. that includes the pressure plate clutch disc and throw out bearing. I know that you said that the diaphram type is smoother in shifting but what else makes it better than a regular clutch? When you replaced your clutch was the truck on a hoist or did you do it on the ground?
thanks for the response
brad
You do not need a lift to do this job. In fact, it's much easier on the ground, that way you don't have as high to lift the tranny. I would wonder about ANY clutch that cost $50.00 for it and the pressure plate. Chances are that you are going to be back in there doing it again VERY soon. As far as the diagphram type clutch, it is alot better because there are more contact points for the throw out bearing to contact. It is an overall stronger clutch and plate.
Brad, I think you had better do a little more "diagnosis" before you spend the time and money on replacing your clutch. First of all, parking a vehicle in 2nd or 3rd gear will not provide as much resistance as 1st or reverse. That's why you shift to a lower gear when descending a very steep hill; to let the gears take advantage of the compression of the engine for braking. Apparently you have a tachometer? If the clutch is slipping, it will slip the most in high when pulling; just the opposite of when parked with engine stopped. So.......if your clutch is, indeed slipping, you should notice the engine (by way of the tachometer) speeding up noticibly while attempting to accelerate on a long hill even though the speedometer shows the truck is not moving faster. A badly slipping clutch will sound almost the same as a torque converter in an automatic equipped car. The engine will rev up noticibly as you feed the gas, but the vehicle will not accelerate correspondingly. My humble opinion, Brian G. NY
Cheap clutch(s) are a bad investment--because you're gonna have to fix it again in short order---get a centerforce clutch (they make several different models) and do it and forget it!!!!!!Besides , the pedal pressure will be significantly LESS with a cf clutch , not to mention the "quality" of the product!!!!!! :-X11
