If I'm losing an injector or worse yet, injectors?
About two months back, my X started making a clicking sound on the drivers side of the block. I thought it was just something minor that would go away, but now it's back and more pronounced. It occurs mainly at startup and idle, it doesn't do it at highway speeds or even around town; just when I'm at a stop. I took the X on a long freeway run becuase it hadn't seen the highway in a while, but that didn't help either. Am I losing an injector? If I am, what are some aftermarket options and how will they benefit me?
Im in a rush here and dont have the time to explain this, but a clicking sound could also be the fault of your fuel sysem. Do a search for that in the fourm, and Ill elaberate further when I get off of work tonight.
Sorry, i was rushed too. heres what i've picked up anyways:
PSD Injectors can make noise from lack of fuel flow from the tank. In other words, mabye it could be a fuel filter along the way, or mabye the pump is lazy, it dosnt mean 100% the injectors are toast.
Yeah, I have the same problem Toreador but my noise is on the Passenger side of the block, I have done the HPX mod, and even Kwik's fuel rail air bleed mod, and still have the chatter, not normal diesel either alot louder. I did a search and even heard a few clips someone had taped and it sounded the same as air in the fuel rail problem. But even after the mod, the engine is a little quieter but the rattle is much more noticable now.

Did you do the Hutch-fuel-pickup mods and the pre-pump fuel connector mods? If not, you may still be sucking air into the system.
Even though Kwiks mod does a nice job of circulating fuel through the heads, if you are sucking a lot of air, you probably will still hear the injectors cackling.
I haven't done a regulated fuel return, yet. I also haven't done Kwik's version of it. But as soon as I did the in-tank pickup mods and pre-pump connector mods, the injectors became much quieter. My wife used to ask "Is it supposed to sound like that?" No longer.
I think the regulated fuel return is important - but I don't think it is as important as fixing the source of air in the fuel. Just my opinion.
I just took the X for a drive and now it seems like it got worse. It doesn't sound like itself at all. I've owned this vehicle since it rolled off the lot in 2001 and I KNOW what this thing should sound and feel like. When I start it, it revs like it's supposed to, then the RPMs dip a little too low, it sounds like it's inches away from stalling, and the engine vibrates a little. (it sometimes "twitches" at idle) Acceleration isn't what it was, I now have to mash more of the pedal just to maintain speed and or even pass someone. I've given this some thought, and like SuperDutyF250 and parkland said, I'm thinking it's the fuel pump giving me fair warning.....

Don't stop the suggestions, I still don't have the slightest clue as to what could be causing this. I still need all your input so I can accurately diagnose the problem and solve it.
I'm just gonna guess here until somebody smarter comes along.
Have you had any SES lights? I'm thinking no or you would have said so. Do you have a scanner? If not, take to AZ and see if something is there.
In the interem, I would go back to stock tune, then disconnect batts for a while and start fresh. Then check DTC. If you have a spare CPS, throw that in just for giggles to see if the problem persists or changes at all.
Also. if you think your fuel pump is on the way south, ya may want to get a pressure gauge on it and check it both at idle and underway. I don't believe this is your problem based on your symptoms but you never know. I'm just hoping for you that the noise you are hearing is not a major mechanical item=$$$
Wish I could help more but those are my thoughts.
On edit: I just bolded the above because that is the first thing I would do before trying anything else. Obviously, change/check one thing at a time and evaluate.

You might have an injector or two that's not up to snuff, or a failing fuel pump, but my initial impression reading this is bad IPR o-rings. It would explaing the stumbling idle, declining power and additional noise from the injectors.
