Oil change intervals...

You are supposed to change your oil every 3,000 miles correct.

I went to a Ford dealership for my past two oil changes, and both times the new sticker they put on the window is for about 5,500 miles.

The same with my dad's truck.

Is there something I am missing here?

I think that would be the max you should do for mileage. It never hurts your vehicle to do an oil change any sooner, and I think some oils "wear out" their full protection after 4000ish miles.

I'm still getting it changed at around 3,000. I was just wondering why Ford was telling me to come back every 5-6,000.

Strange, I just went to my local Ford dealer for the second 5,000 mile interval oil change and they are telling me it should be every 3,000. I pointed to the Ford service guide that came with the car and they did a quick tap dance about "severe driving conditions, blah, blah, blah." Of course, these are the same people telling me using a quart of oil every 800 miles in a brand new vehicle is perfectly acceptable these days. And car dealerships wonder why they have such a credibility problem with the public. We have 7 Fords in the family fleet from '91 to '05 and all get changed at 5,000 miles with no problems at a combined 845,000 miles.

Motorcraft oil is a synthectic blend that can easily go 5k mile. 3k intervals is a waste of a good oil. Sounds like they know what they're doing.

You're suppose to change the engine oil?

Agreed; a dealership that recommends you give them 6/10ths of what another one would tell you, you need to give them is a good one in my book.

READ your owners manual.... The only ones that say you need to change your oil every 3000 miles are the Quickie Oil Change places. NONE of the manufacturers recommend that for normal driving.
On my diesel with 15Qts of oil, I change around 10,000 miles and have NEVER had an oil related repair. It now has over 368,000 miles on it.
Any Ford dealer that recomends a 3000 mile oil change is just trying to get more of your money.

Should refer to the owners manual for oil change intervals. Go to MotorcraftService.com then go to Owner Guides on left of page, then specify year, and model.

If driving under extreme driving conditions, the manual states around 3,000 miles.
If normal driving conditions, the manual states around 5,000 miles.

"5,500 miles" is probably beyond what the owner's manual has stated. If you are driving your vehicle under extreme driving conditions.

Much discussion about oil change intervals is stated , in the "Oil and Lubrication" Forum, based on oil change intervals, oil viscosity, oil brand and UOA's. You can also find extensive information at this forum.

I running anywhere from 3,500 to 4,500 mile on my 70's Ford Trucks, depend on the driving condition of the engine.

I've changed oil at 5,000 miles for many years and have never ever had an oil related problem. At one time (my 78 model company car), Ford recommended 10,000 oil change intervals. Besides, even us morons can keep up with it (5,000-10,000-15,000 etc) without reminders.

I change my oil and filter every 5,000 miles and I have put 230,000 miles on a `96 Explorer and recently 200,000 miles on an `01 Windstar without any engine problems. I started going by 5,000 miles because it was easier to remember; ...50,000 miles, 55,000 miles, 60,000 miles....etc. (I guess that makes me a moron too.)

Ford was recommending 6000 mile OCI's as far back as the 1960s.

The 3000 OCI is a myth, and a waste of money.

ford states 5k for normal driving and 3k for harsh conditions. 3k is just a waste of time money and good oil. all the ford spec'd 929a and 930a spec oils are good for 5k minimum look at some of the uoa's. with the better GP II II+ basestocks the oils can go much further between changes.
