just got a "new" 96 f150 eddie bauer. im trying to find a set of headers for it, but am coming to realize the 4.9L6 Y is not too common. can anyone tell me where i can find a set, or is this something that is going to have to be completely custom fabricated. any help would be greatly appreciated
I say don't even bother - the factory manifolds have pleanty of airflow for that engine and are not very restrictive. You won't gain much if anything from a header swap like you would on a typical V-8 w/ crappy manifolds.
Also, don't forget we have an exhaust systems forum.
its got efi, and i just installed a k&n cold air intake with an airaid throttle body spacer to help it breathe a little better. im just trying to open up the exhaust side more. the plan is to put a full custom exhaust, cut out the cat, n either do a short pipe side exit, or duals out the back. next question, for performance n sound, got any recommendations? ive never heard any 300 with a good exhaust so i have so reference to go off of
Kinda wasting your time..if you want power throw a V-8 in it it's easy enough...
Throw a cat back on it and call it a day. I ran a gibson dual sport kit on my previous truck (95 F-150 300) and it sounded pretty good. It's hard to find a good exhaust for those that don't make them sound like a tractor engine. It's the only kit I have heard that sounds good but my experience is limited with that.
Your typcial glasspacks or the like don't really sound good.
i have a 92 300 and the best thing u can do to it is take the cat's off. also hooker does manek headers for it you can find them by calling summit racing. there about $360 and there the only ones i could find and ive been looking for a long time. where did u find the cold air intake and how's the spacer working out for ya???
auto zone actually carries the k&N cold air kit, just make sure you specify whether you have mass air or not. that n the spacer got me a tiny bit of low end n about 2 mpg highway. i think itsworth it. spacer was air raid, got it off of autotrucktoys.com. intake was about 150 n the spacer was around 90
My friend owns a 300 81 ford and it sound goods and has nothing but 2 inch pipe and tips and it sound like a v eight down low but it has it's own disstive sound. Don't dis the 4.9
I am the owner of the 81 and It toke a lot of work to get the exhaust to sound the way I wanted it to. It has a good rumble down low and it will cackle when you rack the pipes but it isn't a v8 sound. I did notice a slight power loss when I put extra pipe on over the straigh pipe with a glass pack that it use to have. It is because of the small pipe I used to Y the exhaust under the bumper. Tips make the engine sound better but it never will sound like a v8. the tips give it a deeper rumble down low. They are a very good all around engine. Not a power house but will get the job done and last a long time. The 300 from the factory in this year had factory split manifolds so I can see how the flow wouldn't be a problem.
