Andy, The C4 is usually found behind the the smaller engines like the 302, C6s were used behind the larger. Would a 351W ruin a C4, I suspect a lot of debate could be applied to that one. C4s as well as AODs are built for racing, so they can be made tuffer. If I had a C4 in a truck, needed a new engine and had a 351W, I'd put it in.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
i have run many stock C4 351 combos and have never had a problem. the C4 was designed as a light duty trans but as the racers have shown it will rock with the best of them. it is also nice to note that ford saw fit to use the C4 behind some 351M's in the 70's. hawkrod
I have had a c4 in my 351w powered 74 bronco for around 7 years. This transmission has seen lots of hard use ranging from towing to off roading, even a teen driver (me). I would say use a c6 if the truck is used for heavy duty applications otherwise the c4 would be fine.
If you have an actual "truck" C4 you should be fine, unless you are planning on doing lots of heavy towing, or off roading, I would recomend installing a Heavy Duty shift kit in that C4 as well, not a high performance type, they are different, and while you are in there change the filter, clean the pan, and replace the modulator as well.
