US Grand Prix

So I was thinking about going to the US Grand Prix (Formula1 racing..).

I don't know where to start. I do know that i would like to do the three day pass. I don't know what to expect to pay, what to do for hotels, which seating to pick and where it is located, how to get there (fly or drive??) etc etc.

Anyone been there before? Any suggestions on what to do or where to get tickets (if they aren't sold out already..)?

I've never been to a racing event like this before, so I'm a complete noob to this.

anyway, thanks in advance for any suggestions, ideas, opinions.. etc.

Paul

I have gone twice. Thankfully not last year, but the two years prior to that. I live in outside Chicago so I just drive down the morning of the race. I work for my dad's landscpaing company and one of his clients is a Dr. who is very generous. He usually buys 50-75 Paddock tickets right by the start/finish line, and gives them to who he wants. We have been on that last for four years now.

I don't know if they are sold out, but I know that www.stubhub.com has them for sale.

Hotels I'd assume are going to be pretty expensive, so if it's possible try to get further away from Indy if you can.

The Paddock was a cool place to sit. You were right at the beginning and the end and in front of the pits. You only get to see the cars coming around the last bend though and then down the straight away.

Another place you might try to get tickets is around the first three turns that way you would probably be able to see turns 1-7 and maybe even part of the straigt too.

I haven't been to the US Grand Prix, but I have been to the Australian one a few times.
Get there EARLY.

Ok, the stubhub website doesn't have that great of a map for seating, but
is what you're talking about the "northwest vista" or maybe "J" for the first three turns?? That seems like it would be a cool place to sit, if i can still get a view of the starting grid from there.. i'm not sure how the infield is setup for f1 though, i've seen it before, but I don't remember where the stands are and all.

thanks, much better picture than what i was finding...

nw vista is kind of not very close. looks like its between h and j.. do the colors indicate anything (price maybe??).

My friend who i would go with thinks we should drive out there (10 hrs!!) I guess it would save us quite a bit of cash (we're still in high school, so its kind of tight..) This seems like it will be a cool thing to do if we can get it all planned out though.

Hey, I'm in my first year out of high school. I remember the first year I went there you could walk around the a little bit during their practice. I don't know what corners I saw them at but I know it was really close. They may have seating on the infield? that is closer to the track.

Don't know what the colors indicate I just searched this map on google for you.

If you could I would drive. Would probably be cheaper than flying... and could possibly serve as your hotel too.

Paul,

I went to the USGP in 2004 and am going again this year. It is an experience you do not want to miss.

www.usgpindy.com is the official Indianapolis Motor Speedway site. Get tickets there. In 2004 we sat right on the Start/Finish line but low. We're going to to sit there again but under the cover and higher up. Better view and shade!

My advice is to drive. If you dont' drive then you're going to be at the mercy of a taxi cab. We did that back in 2004 and it cost us about 80 dollars a day to go back and forth. This will save you not only on airfare but it's much easier to get around for meals and sightseeing.

As far as hotels, get what's closest to the track and what fits in your budget. As each day passes by rooms get harder and harder to find. I think there was a Comfort Suites at the Pyramids that was available when I checked yesterday. It was about 13 miles away from downtown Indy. I would go for that. In 2004 we stayed at a La Quinta that was near the Pyramids (The pyramids are a business park area) and it took about 20-25 minutes to get to the track via cab.

If you have any other questions, just ask away. I could talk for days about the experience!

Turns out that my friend has family in Indy, so we'll probably be able to stay with them.

What all are you allowed to take with you into the stands? are binoculars, cameras, etc allowed?
Is there anyway to get near the pits during practice?

When you sat at the start/finish line could you see anything other than the long straight? I would think it would be better to see a couple fo turns at least.

anyway, thanks for the website!

You can take pretty much anything you want into the stands. Cameras, binoculars and a small cooler are allowed.

There isn't any way to get close to the pits during practice that I'm aware of, other than if you're a member of some VIP club.

When sitting on the start finish/line you can see pretty far one way or the other but no turns. The reason we're sitting higher up this year is so we can see more of the track. The start of the race is what makes up for just seeing each car go by in a blur of color and noise. If you want the turns I would try to sit in either turn one or the last one, the long sweeper. We sat there a bit during their practice runs and that was awesome.

oh yeah.. is there anyway to figure out where the seats ar elocated within a stand? I keep saying row letters and seat numbers.. but i can't find anything to show me where they are. I'm not sure if we should sit lower or higher.. I guess higher would give a better view of the track like you said.. what do you think?

I definetly want to be able to see the start/finish line though.

My advice is to sit higher up and under the shade. Sitting up close sounds cool, but once the race got going it was just impossible to tell what was coming. Then the cars go by so fast it's just a blur.

As far as finding out where seats are I don't know of a diagram. When we bought our tickets we just specified the section and went from there. Our seats were in Row D so we were in the four rows back from the very front. This was in the Paddock section.
