i have a 01 excursion with the 7.3l. the previous owner put a magnaflow exhaust on it, has a 5" tip. i dont know the specifics on the exhaust. as far as i know it doesnt have any other upgrades with regards to the engine. my question is, i want to improve the mpg the most economical way step by step. if i replace the air intake to an aftermarket, will that help at all? i know a programmer will also help. should i wait and just buy a programmer and not the intake? which should come first? thanks for any input.
You should upgrade the intake for better filtration and flow, but it won't improve the mpg very much if at all. It can make a difference if your current setup is so dirty that it's clogged, but if it's clean I doubt you'll see any real change.
A programmer or chip can definitely help with mileage, by as much as a couple mpg. The biggest thing you can do for your mileage though is to just drive conservatively... coasting to stops, not accelerating or braking hard, keeping it down to 65 or less on the freeway, etc.
If you end up getting a programmer don't forget gauges to monitor EGTs, etc.
the 6637 is a great, and fairly cheap mod to do, its a different air filter from napa part#6637. Will help engine get more air, which will help when you get the chip for more power, cheaper than some of the other options out there. but like ryan said, chip will give the biggest improvement, mine helped a solid mpg, I'm not always the easiest on the throttle though.
