hey guys my injector pump is on its way out. I bought a new one. Any tips on how to change it? I was talking to a diesel mechanic and he told me how to do it (after he told me it was on its way out when ever he turned it up) and i jsut would like more opinions and tips!
thanks,
Jimmy
PS we cranked my pump up 5flats and it just barely makes smoke now how bad the pump was now under a load i get some black smoke. and i got 4inch pipe for the inlet to the aircleaner and i took out the aircleaner lid bowl and also got 4inch pope from the Y pipe back. next and soon will be the turbo kit!
Do not remove the IP gear housing from the engine.
Do be very careful that you do not get the IP drive gear out of time.(Lifting it up and unmeshing the teeth on the gears)
There are three bolts that hold the drive gear to the pump, access them through the cover plate on the front of the IP drive gear housing.
The fuel lines are another pain top remove.
I removed the lines from the injectors and then did the end on the IP.
You have to remove the top two, then the next two, then the IP feed line, then the next two and the last two.
You will see what I mean when you start on it.
Last step I did removing the bolts that hold the IP to the housing is a pain, three bolts.
Install I did exactly reverse of the removal.
Do watch that the alignment dowel is in the right place before you start to put the new IP in place.
Don't turn the new pump up more that 2 flats, without a turbo one will probably be to much fuel. I have a turbo and a new IP turned three flats was to much fuel for the turbo to burn, I had to turn it back down 1.5 flats.
ok when you take the gear off of the pump and leave the gear inside of the engine my question is... Is it like on a timing chain or up aganst another gear? if i pull the injector pump out and i leave the gear in the motor without touching the gear will it fall down into my motor to never be found again or will it stay in its place with no problems?
thanks,
Jimmy
ok thanks! I think before i change my pump im going to get my wheelbearing done and when i chnge the pump im going to change the glowplugs also..
thanks again,
Jimmy
PS How hard will it be to change the pump? My new pump got the injector lines on it already all i have to do i change the pump and hook up the new injector lines to the injectors.
Remove throttle control lines, trans linkage if auto trans and high idle dashpot from old pump. remove the cover plate on the front of the pump tower (2 1/2 inch botls) Inside there are 3 5/16 12 pt) bolts - dont drop them into the front cover ! Remove intake filter assembly. tag and loosen the electrical connections from the old pump. Loosen all injector lines from the injectors. remove 3 9/16 nuts from pump flange. Remove the pump and lines ... it looks like a huge butterfly. This is a good time to replace all injector o rings and plastic caps. Reinstall new pump and lines in reverse order. The new pump will need to be turned so the drive notch lines up on the drive gear. Line up timing marks on flange. start injection lines to injectors - not tight yet. Hook up your electrical lines and other controls. Make sure the filter is full of clean fuel. Make sure all lines are where they should be and crank on the engine for 20 seconds. Let stand for 2 minutes to cool starter. Look under hood to see if fuel is coming thru injection lines. If not, crank for 20 seconds again and let stand for 2 minutes to cool starter. You should have fuel coming at the injectors and snug up the nuts on the injectors. It should start for you ... a little ruff but it will clear itself up. Hope I made sense for you to get the job done.
the timing marks are on the mounting flange and the pump flange. located off to the right side of the top of the pump and mounting flange, almost in line with the injection lines on the drivers side. line em up
This is not a difficcult job if you take your time and follow step by step procedure. I swapped pumps from my 86 to my 84...I was not thinking when I pulled the first pump, I took the gear pump out as well...lets just say a simple job got a lot tougher. Im no mechanic but I managed to line up the gears and it started with no problems.
well guys i finaly got my injector pump changed. I noticed the noise under the hood is louder then before and the truck sounds alot more like a diesel.
thanks,
Jimmy
ps it took us 3 hours total. I also noticed since my old pump was turned up and the new one isn't that the truck still runs just as good but the egts were alot lower while still keeping the same mph up.
thanks again guys!
