Our '55 project came with a early 70's GM stearing colume. Since it doesn't mount securly to the frame like the origional, is there bracketry or advice available for mounting it ? Thanks, Joe
Are you going stock, or modified? I don't particularly care for the look of some of the GM installs, they just don't seem to look like they fit. There are some floor mounts available in the aftermarket world, you could try them. Otherwise, you're going to probably end up fabricating your own bracket. If you fab one, make it bolt to the dash like stock, and maybe another part that bolts to the firewall.
Yes, you need a floor mount for the column. Measure the outside diameter then buy or fabricate a mount. Cheapest/simplest mount is 3 small L brackets from the hardware store. Bolt to the floor in a Y pattern around the column and use short metal screws to attach them to the column. Most expensive but most attractive when mounted on top of carpet is one of the swivel billet ones.
