I've looked thru ALOT of the pages , looking for info on a tranny swap for my 78 F 100 Ranger XLT 2WD C6 , 400 engine & found a headache! : (
I'd like to get an OD tranny for better MGP. Not into power or mudding , etc. Just to haul around my cannon (about 600 LBS) and go fetch landscapping wants/needs (wife WANTS it , I NEED to go and fetch it).
I know I don't want the AEOD tranny (or how ever you spell it). I read somewhere than a AOD from a Crown Vic would fit. (true??)
Would a 4R70W from a 92 E-350 Cargo Van with a 5.8 fit and how much mods would it take to put in ANY 4 speed auto.
No way is it a show or a go truck , just want to more than 9 MPG on the rebuilt 400. (new intake , cam , carb , headers , dual exhaust)
Thanx
if yes you can get an aod in there, look under the tech articles covers this swap. All you need is an adapter plate, good built aod, and probably a new length on the driveshaft.
or just get a gear vendors or ranger overdrive unit and add it to your existing trans.
Im not sure on a overdrive tranny, but have you thought about going with higher rear end gears? With that warmed up 400 you have the power to make up for it.
