i'm going to remove my EGR system from my 5.0L and wanted to know: does anyone know the size bolt that would plug the hole in the manifold? rather than spending $40+ online to have the items shipped, i could run to the local parts store and fetch the bolt required. any help would be appreciated.
(with all due respect, i appreciate feedback but please don't reply with the "why don't you just fix the issue?" responses, please... just looking for a bolt size thanks)
Don't use a bolt. It takes a (I think) 5/8in brass NPT plug from the plumbing department at the hardware store. I did the delete 3yrs ago. Use the same size cap on the egr valve and make a block off plate to go between the valve and the plenum. It will prevent a CEL and I think it runs better.
I don't know if the fittings are the same size as the ones on my 4.9. They were 9/16 x 18 if I remember correctly. Not a common size for parts or hardware stores. I got mine at Fastenal, came in a pack of 10.
You will prob want to do a little research and find out what size you need for sure of course.
The posts I found where ppl seemed to know what they were talking about said 2.5 inches long. This seemed awfully long to me, but is correct for a 4.9. I ended up using 2" because my choices were that or 3". I had to turn the 2" to exactly the right position to clear the engine lift bracket, 2.5 would have been perfect, 3" would have been too long.
I tried the pipe fittings first, the thread pitch doesn't match and they were loose. Might have tightened up if I had run them all the way down the hole, but that wasn't so easily done with the square head. I didn't want to end up with a problem down in a hole in a head so I went and found the bolts, coated them with copper coat and they work fine.
Could very well be different size/pitch on a 5.0, but you might want to get one plug to see how it works first.
I read it as the pipe that goes from the hold in the lower intake to the EGR valve. Those plugs on RMJ look more like the plugs for the holes in the heads. I could be wrong on the size plug i used. It was a long time ago, but the threads match with brass NPT fittings.
You don't have to pull the upper. Just use a ratchet and a swivel. You can get you arm in from the pass side or from the front. Just do it when the motor's cold.
