I have a 70 F250 Ranger XLT Camper Special. The 360 has a cracked head or blown head gasket (after sitting for awhile water leaks in oil, cylinder, and coming out the exhaust) plus it is the original engine w/ 165,000 miles, so it tired, but still runs good. I am looking for a 390 and want to know if there is anything special I will need for the swap. I believe most of the 360 parts should be interchangeable. Any details that I may need to know??? Also I am need of an engine so if anyone has any leads, I would appreciate them.
Are you sure the water is leaking from your cooling system into the engine? I ask this because I have water vapor dripping out of my exhaust too, but I am almost positive it is a byproduct of the combustion cycle (creation of H2O and CO2 from the oxidation of CnHn chains).. I don't know if it matters, but I do not have a catalytic converter in my case (the luxury of being grandfathered with emissions standards!)
Yes, there is coolant in the back cylinder that is pumped out of the exhaust when I try to start it. If I remove the plug and pump the water out it will run fine, however, I do not want to drive it like this because I do not want to ruin the motor.
The 390 should be a direct swap. Also all the externals like alternator, starter, PS etc are interchangeable. As are the heads , valve covers, manifolds, distributor
The 360/390 are identical externaly the only difference is internal as far as I know.
Like Jim said, the only differences are internal. The block, heads, and everything external are the same. So I guess my question is why swap? If you swap you will have to pull the engine anyways. Why not take your ORIGINAL engine and have it rebuilt. You could even have the machine shop or whomever does the rebuild put in 390 crank and connecting rods and that will give you a 390. I just like having everything original on the truck. Plus the other advantage is that you know the history of your ORIGINAL engine, but you probably won't on a swap engine. Just my $.02 worth.
