I have an 1988 ford f-150 5.0 302 trying to find a good sound. My exhaust turns into 1 from the headers, a cat and muffler, tailpipe. I currently have a delta 40 series flowmaster 1 in 1 out, but the sound isnt much different then stock. There are no glasspacks around town that fit either.
I eventually want to do true dual, but dont have the $300 to do it. I do need the cats and mufflers visible. My current cat has been gutted. I am thinking of getting another cat from a junkyard, gutting it and putting piping through it.
How will this sound? I am looking for a loud sound, able to rap, but still be able to pull in the driveway without waking everyone..
Will this be a problem with backpressure etc? The pervious owner had to replace the engine because the cat was clogged..
I have phoney a cat converter. I do the piping right through the thing. It sounds great, and doesn't give you that hollow sound that you hear if you just gut it and put it back on. It won't make it much louder, but it certainly changes the sound for the better.
"There are no glasspacks around town that fit either."
BS. If a Flowmaster can fit, a glasspack surely will, its much smaller. If nothing else, order one. I would just get a glasspack that is the same length as the muffler you now have.
Yup, I checked ever local store/shop that would carry a cherrybomb glasspack, or other cheaper, but there were no 2 1/2 ones. I didnt want to spend $30+ on a glasspack when i will be putting dual exhaust on soon...
i would like more input. Here in MN you need cats and mufflers for visual. I am going to start sticking away or sell some stuff to save up for my true duals.
This is my plan. Shorty headers are comming in the mail. The stock y pipe is still in good condition so i am going to keep that so i dont have to mess with the 02 sensor. The "y" pipe are two seperate pipes until it goes into the collector. I am going to cut the 2 pipes right before the collector and start my new piping. they are going to come up to two seperate cats then two seperate mufflers and exit the rear of the tires are 90º. prolly no tips for now
I WANT THIS THING AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE, so basically trying to straight pipe it. How can i go about putting piping through the cat? The inlet is 3" and outlet 2 1/2. I want as big as pipe as possible so how much work would it be to cut the thing in half? Will placing piping through the cats be louder then hi flow cats? I plan on putting turbo mufflers or something hi flowing that doesnt cost too much. I belive glasspacks are illegal here
ANY input or comments would be apprecitated. I am putting piping through the cats because i think it will make it sound louder, be different from every other dual exhaust and also, im only 17 and can only work part time for my schedule, so my pay money is very minimal...
I have a 3" pipe through my cat. No hollow sound. The whole job took about an hour. All you need is a length of pipe with a female end on it, one coupling, sawzall, and a welder. Ez driveway fix. It is loud! I mean really loud! I have stock manifolds, piped cat, original 40 flow, 3"in to dual 2/12" out muffler, 4" Tips. This truck is almost as loud as my 87 F-250 with headers, No cats, and true duals. Good luck...

thanks,

I don't know how to have a loud truck and worry about pulling in the driveway at the same time. I didn't notice any problem with backpressure. You will get that arguement here I'm sure. I do know that I have more power and more MPG now w/o a cat. As for your cat being two different sizes on the inlet and outlet. Sawzall can fix that if your good with one.
haha well i figured my parents would only have to put up with me for another year...Give em something to remember, and enjoy missing while im gone
I've been thinking of cutting my hallowed cat right now, ptting an adapter pipe in its place and start working on putting the pipe through it. As i looked closer at my cat, thats what i plan on doing. The inlet is 3", and will just cut the outlet with the sawzall. Im gonna try to get the pipe real snug where it needs to be slightly tapped in, not just sliding.
I know someone with a '90 f150, 351w with shorty headers and hi flow cats with the tips kicked out 90º behind the wheels. Thats about the loudest ford i've ever heard in person. Its Carburated now too..
