Question Proper torque converter install???

I will be installing my c-6 from the junk yard soon, My question is what is the proper install procedure for the torque converter. I remember that this is important however it's been a while since my last tranny install, thanks

I have not worked on a C6 and am not a tranny expert but a couple ideas I learned the hard way with other trannies...

1) Make sure you have a tranny jack so you can maneuver the tranny around without worrying about it dropping on you.

2) A buddy is a big help. Beer is good, LATER.

3) Make sure you can reach all the bellhousing bolts before you get too deep into it. Do this BEFORE you disconnect the old tranny. Some of the bolts are a real beach to reach. I have had to go so far as to use a 3 foot extention and work thru the shifter boot on the tranny tunnel.

3a) Make sure you label or mark all linkages and wires.

3b) Make sure your flexplate correctly mates to your converter and your crankshaft. Been surprised before.

4) Be sure to torque and lock tight your bolts on the flexpalte etc.

5) When you get the tranny almost lined up, make sure your pump drive teeth are lined up and centered around the input shaft. Usually there are at least 2 square teeth that mate to the notches on the neck of the torque converter. I once spent several days fighting an install when I didn't know about this.

6) When the tranny is about 1/2 to 1/4 inch from mating to the bellhousing, it should not take hardly anyforce to complete the connection. If it takes force see number 5 above.

7) I would change the fluid and filter fire the engine up to check the level and add more fluid as needed.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

The best way to install the torque converter on the input shaft is to support the trans with the bellhousing up. Put the torque converter in the shaft and start spinning. The C6 converter has three "drops" before it is all the way in. There are two splines the need to line up, and then the two drive lugs for the pump. As each spline and then the lugs line up the torque converter will drop down a fraction of an inch. Once it has done this three times it is all the way in. It will be below the face of the bellhousing when it is all the way in. Make sure it doesn't slide out while you are installing the trans.

If you do that it will probably disconnect the torque converter from the pump, leading to a non-working transmission.

Yes, you have to tighten the bolts, but you do that after the bellhousing bolts are tight. At that point the torque converter studs will be through the flex plate and you won't pull the converter out of engagement.
