Question Lubricating 4x4 Items

In the past I have done most if not all my vehicle (non truck)lubrication myself but now that I'm driving an F250 4x4 for the first time I need some advice on the 4x4 items. My "Service Guide" indicates that it's time to; lubricate 1)transfer case shift lever pivot bolt and control rod connecting pins,2) front axle RH axle shaft slip yoke, 3)hub locks, 4) spindle needle bearings. Can I lubricate these items myself without special tools or dis-assembly? Is there info on-line that identifies the location of these parts and how to lubricate them? Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. A shop manual would help I'm sure but I don't have one as yet....cheap I guess. P.S.....do front wheel bearings need to be repacked or are they a non serviceable sealed unit. Many thanks in advance.

Flash, It looks like I'll have to buy a subscription to get the info. I was hoping to get the 4x4 lub info at no cost to save me buying a complete manual which I don't really require at this time.

To do the spindle bearings you have to take the front end apart down to the bearings (tires off/brakes off/rotor assembly off). The t-case shift linkage is easy enough to do in the driveway, as well as the slip joint on most trucks (driveshaft and axle shaft). The hub locks will need to be removed as well to properly lube them and make sure that they are working and clean.

You really need a factory shop manual for this stuff. I find Chilton and Haynes worthless for anything other than rebuilding engines. Look on e-bay. I got a factory manual CD that way. The locking hubs, for example, requires two different lubricants to do it properly.

Thanks wickymustang and jimandmandy. I've decided to go for the manual...I'm gonna need one sooner or later. Unfortunately the Motorcraftservice website, where one can download the manual is not available to Canadians (US only). I'll try the e-bay route. Meanwhile I'll do the driveway items now, the rest when I have more info. Thanks again.

what year is this truck? since you said sopmething about the front axle RH slip yoke im assuming it has a ttb front, i think you can lube that slip yoke without dissassembly, the spindle bearings cant be dont unless you pull the hub/rotor and the psindle off. for the locking hubs, take it easy on the lube on these, use a light oil, as grease will make things stick

All the other stuff and you will need a special socket that has square teeth so you can remove the locknut on the wheel shaft so you can get the bearings etc out. The socket is specific to year and model so check the lables.

You did not mention your year, but I think the F250 has reverse threads, ie they turn the opposite way on the left side of the truck. Don't quote me on this but I recall my 94 F250 did. I think right is right and left is left, but like I said I forget.

If you have manual hubs the trickiest part is finding the big C clip that holds the hub onto the shaft. It is about the size of a small piston ring, maybe 3 inches and sits in a groove on the inside diameter of the hub. Since it is often greasy you may not see it. Took me a week to find it and this was the reason I first came to this website. I never got an answer then but I stayed anyway. If you feel around the inside of the hub with your finger you will eventually find the ends of the C Clip. You can get it started out of the groove with a sccrew driver or other pointy object. Once you find it it is very easy to remove.

You will probably want to have a powerful impact wrench handy. I think the 250 takes something like 250 to 350 foot pounds of torque to seat the bearings and a similar amount to unseat. I forget, I may be confusing front to rear. But in any case an impact wrench comes in very handy. Those cheap china specials DO NOT have the power to do this job. I was unable to break the nut loose with hand tools, breaker bars or a hammer type impact wrench. You need a powertool.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
