I am not sure what to do. Right now I have a 390gt in my truck and it runs ok. It burns oil tho (even tho the motor is new) so I think I am gonna pull a head and see whats up. It ran pretty good wheen wheeling except it always floods itself on downhill and dies. My options were to either go to an efi 460 or build up this motor. I am thinking about throwing a 428 crank and rods into it, bumping up the cam, getting the heads done and a few more goodies. What do you guys think I should do? Should carbs flood that easily? Any buildup info on a 390 would be great thanks.
Float issues ? might just be that simple...check it.. change the valve seals would be little work in comparison..??? but hey I think like a guy with no money so do what makes you giddy..
Flooding going down hill is the rear float slooping fuel thru the vent anf flooding the engine. Either float setting is too high or you need to install some vent extensions so the fuel can't sloop over. For offroad work you really need the extensions in both bowls. Try these:
I have the 670 Truck Avenger. I had to do a little adjusting to get it to not hesitate off idle with my large cam. I dot. have it tuned completely yet but it runs at very steep angles. Near verticle and at more of a side angle than I am comfortable running. On the near verticle it didn't want to idle but would run just off idle.

Very few have been able to make the truck avenger work properly. The Street Avenger works tons better.
I don't know any thing about the street avenger. I do know the TA is better than the Edel for my situation.
But like above the vent extensions are alot cheaper if the only issue is flooding when going down hill.
Maybe adjust the float too.
Well, this hasn't been commented on yet so here goes:
The 428 and the 390 share the same rods, so all you need there is the 428 crank and correct pistons. I think pistons for this combination are available through the forum sponsor.
I love it when guys just talk about "throwing" a 428 crank into a 390. Easier said than done now. 428 cranks aren't exactly plentiful. And the power difference over the 390 crank isn't hardly worth the cost. 20-30 ft lbs. Not much difference there. And a 460 swap entails more cost, you have to replace the transmisson too. Just build up your 390 and tell everyone it's a 428. No one will know but you.
You're exactly right here. He would probably be better off just building up the 390. But he asked about it so I figured I'd try and help out.
428 cranks are quite available though if you're willing to spend the money. See the link I posted above. They sell Scat crankshafts, among other things. Scat makes a reproduction 428 crank. If I read their price list right, it's $664.05. They can be had, for a price. Is that price worth it for what you'd gain over a 390? I dont think so...

Don't feel bad Randy, I'v read the first post through a few times and don't know what carb is on the truck: 2V, 4V, center-hung floats, side-hung floats? I'd have to guess a 4V since he said it's a GT. My plain old 390 came with a plain old 4160. The floats were set right and it ran well 'till the ex-wife caught it on fire. Then I had to run it with the secondaries blocked (no money for parts). I did see a page where a guy used soft copper tubing to make his own vent extension like the TA. I think that's also where I read about low profile air cleaners causing a venturi effect on vent tubes-siphon gas direct from the vent.

OK everything else being the same, how much difference going from 3.78 to 4.250? Our sponser has a package I wish I could throw money at:
3) 4.080 bore x 4.25 stroke, 6.385 rods
Scat cast crank, I beams
modified Probe "410" flat tops or dished - you pick
file fit rings, bearings, balancer, flexplate
$1995 shipped to your door
I've been wondering about this some time. Most performance people look for gains in a RPM range that I don't wheel in. Just how much difference will you see below 3000 rpm?
If you're going to spend $600-700 for a crank, you'd just as soon go with a 4.25 inch armed one. I couldn't say what gains you'd see, but in stroking it 1/2" you'd see some good numbers down low. Sorta like you'd see in replacing the crank in a 351M with a 400 crank.
